Where are you located? I am planning on going to Monroe to get chicks this spring. They usually have a great selection and the ones I got two tears ago are very healthy and really good layers. There are a few sites that let you order as few as 3 chicks. I will try to remember wich one it is and let you know.

P.S- Just found the website: mypetchicken.com ships as few as three and doesn't put "packing peanuts"(extra chicks, usually males) in to keep them warm. They use warming things in the box.

Are you getting your chicks at the feed store on Highway 2? I got my second batch from them last year and so did my neighbor. We both had serious losses due to maybe coccidiosis. So bad. They were treating chicks there. Be sure if you buy from them, that they are disease free. They had so many wonderful different kinds of birds that I slobbered over and had been wanting for so long.
Seriously? I recommend you buy from people here. It's way too heartbreaking to lose little chicks. I still have one that didn't make it entirely. She is not able to walk but is so sweet and her little sister that nursed her back to health would miss her way too much.
I know I know.. someone here told me to let her go, but she has a light on her now and is so happy to lay about and bask.
Any hoo, KNOW your breeder.
Honestly

Well, looks like we'll be cutting back our "culls" for the year. . . .

I'll be posting up some ads on Craigslist, but in case anyone is interested, I'll be selling some blue Araucana hens, a New Hampshire hen, a black Ameraucana hen, and some Blue and Splash Jersey Giant pullets.

The black Ameraucana is purebred, but has no beard or muffs. She lays a light blue egg.

The blue and splash Jersey Giants are still young, but will get HUGE and lay beautiful "pink" eggs.

The blue Araucanas are purebred, lay light khaki green colored eggs. They're also quite broody.

The New Hampshire is an excellent layer, and has already hatched out some chicks of her own before.

We're on just under an acre but our house is pretty close to the neighbor's house on 3 sides so no roosters for us. People think I'm nuts but many of them have already said they would buy eggs from me. My sister loves to make fun of me for looking at "chicken porn" (BYC forum) all the time.

She'll be eating her words when she wants some of our delicious eggs! I'm thinking I'd like to buy chicks locally. Any recommendations? I'm still trying to figure out which breed would be best.

well it really depends on what you want. if you just want colorful eggs and mellow birds I'd go with Easter Eggers, Olive eggers etc.. the mixed birds.
I'm trying out a couple of Orpington mixed with leghorn to see if I can get production laying power with a mellow docile bird of size. but thats just a experiment atm.

since I think you said 4 birds... try 1 EE, 1 OE, 1 dark egg and 1 brown egg hen..

Hatch update...
started with
36 coturnix quail eggs with 4 day spread on due date.
9 button quail eggs with 4 day spread on due date.
final due date is Christmas.

pulled 3 coturnix cuz cracked/rotten

Couple came early (Sunday)
18/33 hatched Coturnix
6/9 Button quails....

Great hatch and it still has 4 days to go!

Oh and I have 1 Buff Orp x RIR due on Christmas in lockdown..

Needless to say I have a "few" brooders on my bedroom shelf!

My personal preferences. . .

If I had only 2 hens, they would be a French Marans and an Ameraucana, Araucana, or Easter Egger. (dark red, blue)

If I had only 3 hens, they would be a French Marans, Ameraucana/Araucana/EE, and a Polish. (dark red, blue, and white)

If I had only 4 hens, they would be a French Marans, Ameraucana/Araucana/EE, a Polish, and something that lays a brown egg.

If I had only 5 hens, I would take all of the above, and include an Olive Egger. Can't have a rainbow collection without an Olive Egger.

But of course, I have over 40 hens, so I've got all of it.

DH agreed with everyone that it is a blown head gasket, and says that the engine is toasted.

It is not totally toasted, it can be rebuilt, it is not that hard to rebuild the top end...need a good set of American sockets and wrenches, a scrapper-putty knife, lots of coffee cans to put nuts and bolts in to save them...and hope the heads are not warped, slap on new gaskets and bolt it back together.
Usually, if there is alot of miles on it, you may want to go ahead and have the heads 'done'...a valve job, new springs etc.
And maybe rebuild the carb too.
A V-8 Chevy is a beautiful thing!

I Like the way you talk Chickie.

If it is a aluminium head there is a good chance that it is warped, you can have it plained down.
