I'm in the Tacoma area and my daughter is wanting to get into 4H poultry. We are setting up with 4H but now she needs some show chickens. We told her she had to have bantys because we also have standard size laying hens in a suburban yard and two flocks of standards would be too much. We found a very nice person in Gig Harbor that is going to hatch us out some Mottled Cochins. Is there anyone else in the area that breeds Cochin Bantams? If she wants to have project chickens she will need extra genes so we are looking around but not finding much. She has an incubator if anyone has eggs and a great brooder that used to be a reptile cage so it works really well for chicks. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome! Your daughter will love 4-H! My 3 girls have been in for years with poultry and we have all learned so much. DH took over the roll as our project leader this year. We just got a trio of blue/black bantam cochins, but they have yet to lay us an egg. I'm hoping for some any day now. So keep me in mind if you don't hear from anyone else. I got our birds from Sheryl Butler in Bothell, who has excellent bantam cochins. I don't think she posts here, but she does post on the Cochins International forum.

That actually makes alot of sense, because he came out of a partridge breeding...do you suppose the partridge may have been put over whites at some point to accentuate the barring? What do you suppose might happen if I DID put him over whites like I'm thinking? I might just get both partridge AND white and see what happens with both...this is going to be interesting....and MUCH more space-consuming than I had hoped! lol

for small bird and showing you might want to check out serama's...
They are very tame and easy to handle and great for first timers in showing I believe (anybody know for sure?)
The only issue you might have is that they are warm birds and need heat in the winter/cold times.
Mine lives in a large cage/coop thing inside during the winter and my little roo loves to sit in my lap and watch tv or work on the computer with me.

I remember that feeling very well.

Now that I have a husband who works from home, I get that feeling again from time to time.

There was a thread some months ago about how to actually make money raising chickens. One of the tips was to use shredded mail instead of buying bedding.

Can shredded mail be used to line nest boxes?

Be careful about identity theft. You dont want to start receiving bills for high end oyster shell and fancy grit from the four corners of the globe.
