ducks like water, which when mixed with dirt makes lovely mud, which they like EVEN BETTER!!

Depends on what you consider messy I guess? Chickens scratch in the flower beds, so am constantly sweeping dirt and stuff off the porch... Ducks like to do what we call Drill Billing into the ground, everywhere. They aerate your yard quite well. They eat a lot of slugs. I love my duckies I would miss them terribly if I didn't have them! Did I mention they love slugs?? My flower bed in the chicken yard had the healthiest bee balm EVER. No slugs touched it.

are you on FB? I posted some pictures of the muck the ducks have made in the chicken yard.. It will go away when stuff dries up, but in the meantime it's gross... lol!

That was the lesson my DD didn't seem to get.

I can still recall that she thought that everyone else could watch out for her.

I still don't understand where that idea came from, because I sure didn't agree with the concept.

I still hate to ride with her.

I have discovered that I am now officially a bad passenger.

She drives like there is no one else on the road.

I still don't know that she has any idea of how to drive defensively, and I am the queen of defensive driving so I know that I spent a lot of time talking about it even when the kids were toddlers.

These days I most

about it though.

The prices have gone way up, in just the past few years. I didn't know that any of the public schools offered drivers ed classes anymore. It only cost 25.00 the year I went to driver’s ed. Okay that was a long time ago. I went to Nathan Hale high school in North Seattle a long long time ago, almost back in the dark ages.

I learned to drive stick in a 1955 Dodge telephone truck. It was my brothers truck, and I couldn't reach the parking brake. One dark and rainy night my dad had something he needed dropped off up on Tiger Mountain. Well the only vehicle that was available was the Evil Truck from H*@L. I made it up to the mountain and was headed back, when as I was crossing Mercer Island, and I saw the flashing lights behind me. I knew that I wasn't speeding, because I don't think that truck could go faster than 55 mph. I also know that everybody else on the road was passing me that night. Well I was shaken up enough about trying to get the truck stopped that I forgot to wonder why I was being pulled over for the first time ever. I can tell you I still remember the officers face when he came up to the window and saw this 16 or 17 year old girl behind the wheel. I just don't think that is what he expected.

It turned out that one of the original headlight had finally bit the dust. He was really very nice to me, and ended up just telling me to get it fixed as soon as I could. Well after the scary return to freeway traffic, I got off at the next exit, which was Island Crest Way, and I found a Shell station that had a headlight in stock for that truck. I don't know what happen to that poor old truck, but I do know that I got really good at driving a stick shift.

I do know that you seem to need a couple of late model cars, if you planning on running a business teaching people how drive. I would think that the Department of Licensing would be the people to talk to, or go online with to figure out what you would need to start a driver instruction business. It can't be too hard, because I have seen a number of places run by people I would not want ride with.

But the savings on insurance and the 2 years can sometimes make a difference.

I don't think any parents want to let their child take off in a vehicle by themselves at first. I still worry about my both of my kids, and DS has been driving for 7.5 years now. But I must admit that there is nothing better than telling your kid to go get some milk, when all you really want to do is just stay home. I also was so happy when he could drive himself to church at night, when I wasn't up to going. That and he had to drive himself to work, and college classes in Auburn.

It's apparently high tide at our house. There is even standing water in part of the chicken run, which is very unusual. I may need go get some bags of sand. This is just about as bad as i have ever seen the water. I think that there may have been one day last year during one of the flooding events, where the water was even higher.

This the back corner that is supposed to drain the water off of the property.

Okay I got a shot of the very scary hummingbird named Larry. I saw 2 of the birds out by the feeders today. I only caught picture of Larry though. It good to remember that all most all of the boy hummingbirds are named Larry at my house, and all the girls are named Fred. I do have a copper throated hummingbird that comes in the summer that is named Mort.

Wow, that's pretty exciting! I would love to hatch some chicks sometime if I had a little incubator. Of course, then I'd have to find new homes for all of them, but it would be fun to do once or twice. Too bad I don't have any little school age kids so I would have an excuse to do it as a science project.

Have fun Jen - I hope you're going to share pics of your new babies!

Well I can really only speak about Muscovies. As that is the only duck breed I have kept. They are messy messy messy, and being a MUCH bigger duck, well they make bigger messes, AND they fly! So unless the run is covered there is no keeping them in. The drakes get to heavy to fly, but the hen/ducks fly like no other. Even with clipped wings they can still get 10-12 feet in the air. However they are quite sweet, and do not make a bunch of noise, they also dont require large deep water, just enough to rinse their bills in. They did LOVE the large kiddy pool though.

I almost miss my scovies, but I know I'm not set up for ducks.
