Cedrus deodara (Deodar Cedar, Himalayan Cedar, or Deodar)
The inner wood is aromatic and used to make incense. Inner wood is distilled into essential oil. As insects avoid this tree, the essential oil is used as insect repellent on the feet of horses, cattle and camels. It also has antifungal properties and has some potential for control of fungal deterioration of spices during storage. The outer bark and stem are astringent.
It is one of my very favorite-est trees, and grows profusely on the Oregon I-5 corridor area among other places.
Working in sawmills in the Roseburg/Myrtle Creek area we would go down, and retool the entire mill, and then run massive amounts of incense cedar, so by the end of the first night you either loved it or were ready to puke cuz the smell is soo overwhelming.
Those of yopu poor souls that have never smelled white cedar are missing something extroidinary.
The trees also make a wonderful little wooden rose-like blossom that is cool for potpouries.
I want some seedings any one know where to get them ?
I have 6 planted 10 years ago in my property in Northern California...wish I could have dug them up and brought them with, they'd really like it here
