When you candled how many were viable? Just curiouse as to what the hatch rate on these will be. I'm eggcited!!! Will wind up having chicks coming out my ears this year. lol

Do you think my steady 60* tack room will work for brooding the chicks? Obviously I will have a heat lamp on them, but would this be a steady enough temp to raise these babies up?
Ack!!! I gotta get working, must get a brooder set up before hand, so its not a complete caotic panic to get it all done last minute. lol Time sure does fly!

And my incubator should be here this week!!!

Uh oh... Its snowing again...

All right, who ordered all the snow? They delivered to the wrong place.

On a more serious note, my RIR has the squirts. Yesterday I assumed it was stress from moving, but she still has them and is excessively thirsty. She otherwise looks normal, eats fine, good color ... not sure if she has laid an egg. The last time I know for sure she laid an egg was Tuedsay pre-move, and she did not have the squirts then. No runny poo in the Eglu poop trays.

I put her on the other side of the coop for now. What else should I do and what should I be worried about?

This bird will only drink from nipple-type feeders, so I don't think she got it from the water. I use pet bottles like you would get for rabbits, and they get cleaned and filled twice a day. I did just switch their brand of food when I mnoved them to the new coop, and I also gave them a flock block to keep them entertained. Last week the hens had the run of our property for most of the week, so who knows what they were exposed to .... lots of little birdies around.

Anybody got a picture of a good feeder for puttingin the brooder?
The last one I had was a saucey mess.
I just made a new watering milk jug that allows the ducks to stick their heads in. I hate the mud they can make. OK it they are outside, but they are brooding in the house.
Gee...I think I told my DH they were going to be in the living room.

DH thinks I'm crazy to go to the Monroe show being that I'm afraid of chickens. Haha

He is right. But I shall go fully protected under a thick goose down coat with a hoodie.

Our first pure bred springer, my baby, was Sadie. We called her Sadie Bug. We lost her last fall after 13 faithful years. Whenever I was outside, she was always right on my heels askin, "What can I do for you Mom?" Needless to say, I love the name Sadie.

Sorry you lost your sweet Sadie. It's tough. I had a loyal, gentle, intuitive Golden mix who lived to be 15, until he became ill. He was my velcro dog. Saying good bye to him was one of the hardest things I've ever done.

Hey Mr. I'll see if Sheryl can have some maran eggs for you- I still have to get her contact info for you. I'm Jen, I exhibit silkies and will have silkies for sale. You can find me that way- as far as I know I'm the only Jen adult that will be exhibiting silkies.

I kind of met a couple people last time, but I always end up running around like a chicken with it's head cut off helping and talking to people, looking at birds, etc. I'll be around. Sheryl can point me out once you find her, or Cloverleaf, or people not on here (Brian Decker, Larry Urban, Dan Jerome, etc)

I really appreciated you remembering, but I went another way.
I ended up getting some Impeyan pairs instead.
I'll see ya @ the show though.
Mike
