Can you put a layer of sand as brooder bedding??
My ducklings are coming soon...like in a few hrs.

I line my brooder with puppy pee pads and cover that with pine shavings. Twice a week I scoop out the shavings and replace them with fresh, one of those times I pull ap and replace the pee pads, just roll it all up tegether. Very easy, and the brooder is clean.

Kooshie: The wet part, huh?

Wouldn't that be.... all of it?

Just wondering about your math
lau.gif
gig.gif

3 digital
1 mercury and
2 stems

Five thermometers ?

Is this taught with chicken math
hide.gif

yes my math is very bad, I will be the first to admit !
I am an artist !!!
The other side of my brain never fully developed.
That is why I fall down alot and walk with a limp

Seriously though, one of the stem thermometers is usually in the big incubator & I just added it this morning to double check the other five that live in the hatching incubator..normally there is just 5 in there.
I am wearing out the plexiglass window watching for a pip...got nothing so far.
But then I set the eggs at night, so it is still sorta early...they actually should pip tonight.
**Sigh!**

On another note:: Anyone have any really good producing cherry trees here on the swampy side of the state ??
I am looking for a Royal Ann type and a bing type..Dad said go with Rainier that they are huge, yellow with a blush & fool proof out here..and Bing type I am looking up..any ideas ??

Did you just move here? or have you been hiding out? and if you can where in Wa?

Oh eenie- like your signature.

I moved here less than a week ago. California tried very hard to keep me, but I managed to escape.
And I'm living in the wet part of Washington, if that narrows it down at all...

Well welcome to the wet part of Wa. I'm in the wet part too. Thankfully today is a nice dry day

This thread moves fast and with you here now- OMG I'm gonna have to quit my job to BYC full time.

Imp- already have given up eating and sleeping breaks

Hi Kooshie !! Welcome to BYC!!
And you are right, escaping California can be very difficult to say the least.
I thought I was gonna have to crawl outta there on my hands and knees even if I had to live here in a lawnmower barn

Still blowing a hurricane here !!
me thinks my wee babes maybe DON"T WANT TO COME OUT!!
They KNOW there is a cold storm blowing and they want to stay in their cozy warm shells....

wow.....thread is dead today...............maybe alot of folks with no power..I hope eveyone's incubators are OK!!

Rainwolf::Got power ?
I heard Shoreline has none, and parts of Whatcome County...I hope all your babies are OK!
Haller:: Get your eggs yet ?
When do you expect them to arrive ?
Oh I am bored..I am gonna go count thermometers and read up about cherry trees, if I don't tip over in the wind and bruise the big wart on my nose!!

I use sand...I get sacks of dry sand for my coop dust baths & poop trays..and the little boogers in the brooder get sand too.
They need it to digest, and it is non flammable

So we do not worry about igniting the brooder.
I caught the little devils fighting over & trying to eat shavings before, but it has never seemed to harm them.
On the other hand, while using shavings, I had several babies get busted toes that ended up curling back and it was a pain to tape their toes straight.
The shavings act like snow drifts and I suspect that is why I had broken toes.
I switched back to sand in the brooder & have no more broken toes again.
To clean it, I use one of those big green square grain scoops like Blue Ducklings posted, and scoop it out and right into the garden beds it goes, really helps with the sticky clay soil here.
