Too late for today, but you can buy a couple of "Snuggle Safe" microwave disks. They hold the temp at 85 for 12 hours and my little chickies hang out on them.

And how do you heat up the disks if you lose power?
I missed that.

We just lost power here and I got a brooder with one duckling, an incubator and a hatch box loosing heat fast.
I left the brooder and incubator but put a candle and hot water in the hatch box.
It worked for a while, till the power came back on.
I'll have to figure out how to do it so I don't actually open the hatch box.
Hope duckie hatches.

Since they stay warm for such a long time, I stick mine in the microwave and get them ready when the weather gets nasty, then I put them under my feet to keep my toes warm while I waste time here! If the power does go out, they are already heated (we also have a generator, so it is no big deal if I forget).

Ah I see the many posts, OK!!

Don't let the post count fool ya. If she didn't lose so many in the cleanups she'd be like 30,000 or more.

Hey Kooshie- Have you ever counted it up?

CL,
Can you believe Kooshie and I hit 4000 posts within minutes of one another.

Russ/Imp feels very inadequate

I'm delighted that Kooshie has joined the Washingtonians

Don't feel too bad; we all want to be Kooshie.

We are officially calling it the Won-Ton Egg.

The family decided we should wait until our next 4-H Poultry Meeting on the 12th and disect it with the kids. I'll definently be taking photo's of the process!

I am home and we didn't lose power so all my chickees are happy and moved back into their regular brooder.

My appt was in Seattle so I had to drive across the 520 and man was it windy! I don't think I've ever seen such big waves! I was on the far side from the waves and the spray was hitting my windshield!

Last night I popped 7 more bantam cochin eggs in the bator, and I just popped in another! So now I'll have a staggered hatch with the big one on the 13th and hopefully a bunch of cochins on the 22nd. Gotta find my LG and clean it up to use it as a hatcher.

I line my brooder with puppy pee pads and cover that with pine shavings. Twice a week I scoop out the shavings and replace them with fresh, one of those times I pull ap and replace the pee pads, just roll it all up tegether. Very easy, and the brooder is clean.

I use sand...I get sacks of dry sand for my coop dust baths & poop trays..and the little boogers in the brooder get sand too.
They need it to digest, and it is non flammable

So we do not worry about igniting the brooder.
I caught the little devils fighting over & trying to eat shavings before, but it has never seemed to harm them.
On the other hand, while using shavings, I had several babies get busted toes that ended up curling back and it was a pain to tape their toes straight.
The shavings act like snow drifts and I suspect that is why I had broken toes.
I switched back to sand in the brooder & have no more broken toes again.
To clean it, I use one of those big green square grain scoops like Blue Ducklings posted, and scoop it out and right into the garden beds it goes, really helps with the sticky clay soil here.

Ooo, good idea! We have the nasty red sticky messy clay too.
