Hey on the topic of horses... What do you all do for rain scald? My 2yr old filly came to me with rain scald, I have treated with vinager, and antimicrobial shampoos, she still has it. I feel like Im fighting a loosing battle against a fungus... I'm hoping that the temperatures stay warm like they have been, that way I can take her up to Diamond Hill, and use the hot wash rack and dryer... Have any sudgestions before I go through another $80 bottle of shampoo?

Tea Tree oil..we use a brand widely available at Walmart, it is pure, and cheap..in the topical fish department called Mela-fix...superior anti fungal.
It is so powerful, just a few tablespoons can treat a large pond with fungal infections on fish.
When we had the koi farm, we used it often,
I have since diluted it and sprayed it on the bird's legs to prevent scale, and all sorts of other issues like hot spots and itching on dogs,,or basic cuts & scraps.
You can use it on yourself, for basic shampoo pr soap making, or itchy business like jock itch or atheletes' foot, in a foot bath.
You could easily mix a few Tablespoons in a bottle of Shampoo & bath a horse, or dilute with water and put in a spray bottle and spray her back.

I love the stuff, nothing better.
I think a bottle is a few dollars at Walmart, also available at Drs Fosters & Smith, Petco & other pet oriented places.
It is pure Melalueka oil..smells great too.

OOH! I love tea tree oil! Didnt know it would work on rain scald though! So would I apply it like the vinager, and just let it dry on? No rinse, just spray on and leave it alone? How heavily would you apply it? I need a couple warm dry days...

My muscovys ate ALL of my frogs last spring!!! I normally have a bunch "mainly tree frogs" all over my back deck during the spring. but last year the scovies ate them all. One would grab onto a leg, and run. The others would chase after, tearing pieces off...

was a sick thing to watch, but they're just doing what they do.

Have you seen them eat mice? Or sparrows? That's gross, too! LOL

I never saw the scovies go after nice. Ive seen my previous flock of chickens tear apart a couple moles, and a few mice. And they loved snakes too.

Well personally, I think it is worth a shot with Prada... She has the worst rain scald I have personally seen. My equine vet Dr. hills says Im doing everything right. Ive followed his directions to a T, but it hasnt gotten any better over the winter. She has a couple quarter sized bald patches along her shoulders where her blanket sits, and those scabby feeling bumps all at the bottom of her main. So the hope now is that once drier weather sets in, we can get better control over it, and get rid of it all together. I hope I dont have to do a complete body clip on her.

But if it comes down to it, then thats what I will do.

I also need to go dig through all my blankets and see if I have the next size up from a 71" She's a BIG baby! She has almost out grown her second blanket since coming home to me. lol

Here is the million dollar question: What it is "active" ingredient used in the horse shampoo you use ?
I have never heard of nor seen that tea tree oil causes any hormone problems. You can use it too strong and it will thus cause irritation as this produce is a strong concentration.
In the case of a horse shampoo, I would get a big bottle of human shampoo,(make up at least half gallon) and mix 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon full of this tea tree oil product into it.
Products with aloe will be good to soothe sore spots too.
Mix well, and bathe her.

I have no idea what the active ingredient is in this shampoo or the spray. I have the spray sitting here next to me, so can tell you whats in it. The shampoo is out in the tack room.

deionized water, sodium laureth sulfate, cocamidopropyl betaine, cocamide dea, propylene glycol, triclosan, allantoin, mucopolysaccharides, polyquaternium-10, sodium pca, extracts of lavender, thyme, and clove, fragrance, and methylparaben...

So like I said, I have no clue what the "active" ingredient is.

Hmmmmmm, does it break down at all? It might fit in the back of my truck. But we are taking the short box, so I don't know. That was why I was wondering if it breaks down at all we could put it in the back. I bet one way or another you will be able to get it back.

I think it does....it's 62" tall...and I think short beds are 6 1/2 feet? If you could do that for me--I'll give you some test eggs when we get back?

Doesn't your new bator come this week?

I will bring some tie downs. I may have a couple of rubbermaid boxes in the back wrapped in tarps (great idea btw - This is RFF idea) if there is not enough room in the cab of the truck, but I think we should be able to set it on its side, etc. I would love some test eggs....yes the bator should be here on the 17th. Thank you so much. I of course would have just done because your a neighbor....but heck, I won't turn down some test eggs.
