OK so I am the curious kind. Always looking to add to my wee bit of knowledge. I have never heard of "celiac". Would some one be willing to inform me with out getting feelings hurt. Even if ya just wanna PM me. If not Well I guess I don't need to know that bad.

Charlotte the 17th is living in my greenhouse as I type. I keep thinking that I should take her extra to eat, and apologize whenever I mess up her web.

Hello, Evergreen Staters! I'm in East Vancouver, and at one time had 7 chickens. (3 of which I was raising from chicks for someone else, so weren't with me long). We are now down to 2 due to predation (we suspect raccoons).

I'm not a huge egg eater, but I love my funny girls. They get along great with their kitties & a german shepard/rottie cross dawg (who is currently snoring, lol!)
My friends benefit from my pets, and we all agree there's nothing like fresh eggs. My girls get to roam my fenced yard regularly, so I'm sure the fresh greenery helps, too.

Chickens do seem to have a fanatic following in the PNW!

Wow! I got an email in this morning saying the date was tentatively scheduled for February 28th and I was gonna pop in tonight and say that sounds good but maybe postponing it a bit until the Spring Cascade Show could work too. Anyways, there's 3-4 pages of posts since I got that message so this idea is getting a lot of attention and isn't that great?

Here's my final two-cents worth. Kim, my hats off to you for stepping up and trying to lead this effort. My advice is to go with the KISS system - Keep It Simply Silly. If you let it, this thing will snowball and get completely out of hand. You're not going to please everybody no matter how hard you try. And, if you get bogged down in the minutia, the big picture is very liable to collapse. For example, putting a list in front of a dish with the ingredients may be a good idea for the diabetics but what about those with allergies? Should we have a rule that says no perfumes, colognes, certain clothing types, etc. etc. etc.

Just take charge, make the decisions, and those of us that can live with them will show up. Those that can't won't and hopefully there'll be no hard feelings. If there are, well, don't lose any sleep over it.

Btw, for what it's worth, when I go to a potluck, I usually try to take a spoonful of everything so I can try new things. If I don't like it, then I haven't wasted anything and if I do, then I can go back for more if there's some left and, most importantly, I can find out who made it so I can see if they'll pass their recipe on to me. I also go there expecting that I might be pleasantly surprised. Potlucks are where I've learned that raccoon tastes pretty darn good in chili or as summer sausage, that there are a lot of great ways to cook venison, that some folks from other countries have some delicious treats I've never heard of, and other things like that. For those who are less adventurous, all ya gotta do is bring plenty of what you're making and just have some of it plus other things that you see that you think are pretty "safe" to eat.

And as Forrest says, "That's all I've got ta say 'bout thaaaaat." So Kim, it may be awhile before I get back on here. Just keep me in mind once the details are all settled. Let me know what's up and hopefully I'll see ya all there!

Thanks Imp. I so understand the reading labels, for other reasons for DW. I sometimes notice people giving me strange looks in the store while I read labels and I could care less let em look.

So I assume (that's such a scary word) that if a dish said it had (just for example) peas, cheese, olives, imitation crab, shrimp and mayo someone with allergies would know if there were things that could be dangerous to them? I guess my point is there may be ingredients that would have a list of ingredents.
 
I can answer that one for you. Yes they would most likely have a really good idea if those things contained something they shouldn't eat. And if they only suspect, they can avoid it (depending on the severity).

I have to politely disagree about the list being a problem. There are so many people with some very serious allergies. If everyone simply hand writes the name of, and what they are putting in their dish as they make it, the task is simple. Then tape it to the dish it comes in so it can be taken off once the dish is on the table, and taped by it. I love goodies and don't want to miss the fun, because I too like to try a lot of different things. However it would be too difficult to ask on every dish I suspected contained hazelnuts. And it is too boring to skip over all of them. And then there is that surprise sauce, or salad that you don't think has it, but does. I want us all to have fun that night, and don't want anybody to end up in the hospital. So while I said earlier that I should just buffer what I say, this one has to stand as a good suggestion IMHO. Let's not take the risk of someone getting sick. Please can we ask everyone to write out the ingredients, or if you are willing the entire recipe. Then all can have a great night and maybe come home with a new favorite food.

If the "pot luck" wasn't part of the theme for this it might be different. But part of what we are doing is getting together to taste each others idea of good food. Everyone who wants to should be able to taste everything they can.

We are all in the middle of planning a chicken party in the late winter. But it always great to meet a new Washingonian! This is a pretty friendly group. Things got a little bit weird earlier because we are all friendly and mildly opinionated. Don't let that scare you. Everybody seem very nice to me..... Oh, you might wanna watch out for me. I am definately a dork, which is a good thing, by the way to most of us.
 
Actually, the whole write down the recipe sound fun to me. I like to try new things too, and it would be fun to have new recipes. And that way people with food allergies or sensetivies can see what's in it. Take care of two things at the same time.
