they grow like weeds in the spring here and sometimes in the fall if its rainy enough and in an area recently burned... then again many forests where i live have burned alot so this area produces a few hundred pounds and it is spread over the elevation of the mountains through the season....

one of these days i want to train a dog to sniff for truffels at fir trees....

Around large Cotton wood trees,
It's still early, trust me, another week or two should look alot better.
Make sure the trees that your hunting around are 15-20 years old about 2-3 feet around.
You should do very well if nobody goes through those woods!!!
Mike

If you are finding them under cottonwoods, they are not true morels, but Verpa, which are also yummy and edible.

from: http://www.seattlepi.com/getaways/24288_shrooms24.shtml :

Fortunately, the morel is fairly distinct, resembling only a few other fungi. The closest is the early morel, which is not a true morel -- although many longtime pickers insist it is -- but rather a species more properly known as Verpa. It is found in spring, often under cottonwood trees, and it is edible and tasty, although some people are allergic to it.

The only dangerous fungi that really resemble the morel are brain mushrooms (Gyromitra), which look like morels only in that they have brown caps and a white stems.

But don't take chances. The old saying is: When in doubt, throw it out. To be safe, newcomers to the hobby should first go with others who know mushrooms.

"The best way to learn is to join a group like the society," says Mueller. "They're very responsible."

I have a day old duckling you can "borrow" I know you don't want ducks...this one is a loaner.

I borrowed a couple of chicks from Rainwolf . Her chicks are the same age, but they seem stronger and steadier on their feet. I may have gotten some sickly chicks.

I bet my buckeyes have fun! I'm sure the Babanter chick will perk up with friends.

nice find Eagle..

There are light sussex, coronation sussex, red, buff, white, and propbably a couple others and also those in bantams. They are called lines in chickens. I have one light sussex from RFF that I got from eggs and it is very friendly. The other birds I have are not the same mentally or in physical stature. RFF birds are far superior to the other birds I got in Light Sussex.

@ Ogress: Thanks! She really is a sweet hen. If it weren't for the "mossyness" on her back, I would have kept her...she's absolutely friendly and very fun to have around. I just can't keep them all and if I can't show it, I won't breed it.

@4cats3kids1hubby2many: Probably towards the end of summer I'll be needing to sell at least two of my Sussex--one Coronation and one Light who's combs aren't perfect (you saw them at the show) and I don't want to risk reproducing that....I might sell my rooster too since he's too frostbitten to show. I will be hatching out a lot of chicks next month as replacements....

Im going to look for some runner ducklings or hatching eggs. I would prefer either blue, chocolate, or the grey or trout colors but any colors will work. I would like to get young ones or either eggs so I can work into them. Maybe 3 or 4 straight run to start with.

I am tired....and I just spent the last 45 minutes trying to find an old post (the one that 4cats3kids1hubby2many was referring to) but I can't. I think they need to make an easier search engine on here. I mean I can search for a key word that is within a post but then it shows the entire thread of like 28,000 or something?

I looked through a few hundred pages and now I'm giving up! LOL
