They're chickens, what can you expect? I moved the chicken tractor to clean ground this morning and Sylvia walked into the precise center of the clean grass and carefully deposited a poo.

I know ...... chicken = pooo.... but I am sorry it was in the photo.

It was a nice visit! I wish I could have stayed longer but we were getting highjacked by the auction crowd and I was trying to figure out how I was going to get my awesome new brooder/grower box out of the hall and into my Prius. When I get home I'm going to have to determine how to sneak it into the house without DH noticing.

CR's booth was huge and impressive! I saw blueducklings, RFF, Cloverleaf, Pips&peeps, and Jbear today. I know others were there but I didn't know where to find them.

My gf who came with me today is thinking about adding call ducks to her flock now. She's also thinking she would like some Marans and probably Ameraucanas as well since she wants more variety in her egg basket. She currently has a nice flock of 6, but they all lay varying shades of brown.

I love these shows - SO much eye candy!

Sorry I am on my ipod. I bought a large brooder & 3 types of hatching eggs.

I am going back in the morning to make sure I didn't miss anything that I "need."

I lost the chance to get some hens that were on CL because of the bad weather and other coop & run building hang ups, and today I started thinking about what I'd really want in the way of hens to go with the two BLRWs when I get the coop built. I like Wyandottes, but for now I'd rather not get more BLRWs and get white-egg-laying and/or good mothering hens and see what the offspring of my current pair are like. I have to put too much energy into breeding purebred cattle, and the chickens were supposed to be the fun stuff. On the other hand, when I think about what chickens I really like now that I've been thinking about it for a while, it comes down to Silver Laced Sebrights, Silver Spangled Hamburgs, BCMs, Buckeyes, Blue Andalusians and Welsummers, all of them coming in way behind every possible color and pattern of Wyandottes. And few of them, you note, appropriate to running with a BLRW rooster (and only one of those laying white eggs).

And then there's the whole breeding thing: I realy need to have a broody hen, or a couple, because the thing about cattle and me is that sooner or later I'll get hung up in some complicated cow thing and not take care of vulnerable things: I have a terrible record of starting seeds inside, for instance.

Of course the other thing is that I want a bunch of banties of the colorful sort to keep in an other-than-Ian's-Yard; I've got about a half acre of possibilities.

It's all more complicated than I thought it would be.

Hey me too!

which brooder did you end up getting? I got a 2 footer with a smooth plywood floor, (not the slippery floor). Thank you Heather for pointing me in that direction. I did need one of those. Now I need a successful hatch from Jeanine's and illia's eggs, so I'll have chicks.

Good! I thought that sounded like the best buy for you. You should be able to make good use of that. I liked your idea of possibly dividing it in the middle if needed. Those seemed like pretty good prices too. Plus I don't have to try and hassle DH into building one for me and having it turn out differently than I expected.

There's a tempting thought. I doubt if we'll make it back as my friend wants to head home early. Sorry we didn't get a chance to visit with you or anyone else for long. It was getting close to 2 pm and my friend was about to faint from hunger so we had to get into town to find lunch. We came back afterwards so I could buy the brooder which just fits in the back of the Prius!
