I lost the chance to get some hens that were on CL because of the bad weather and other coop & run building hang ups, and today I started thinking about what I'd really want in the way of hens to go with the two BLRWs when I get the coop built. I like Wyandottes, but for now I'd rather not get more BLRWs and get white-egg-laying and/or good mothering hens and see what the offspring of my current pair are like. I have to put too much energy into breeding purebred cattle, and the chickens were supposed to be the fun stuff. On the other hand, when I think about what chickens I really like now that I've been thinking about it for a while, it comes down to Silver Laced Sebrights, Silver Spangled Hamburgs, BCMs, Buckeyes, Blue Andalusians and Welsummers, all of them coming in way behind every possible color and pattern of Wyandottes. And few of them, you note, appropriate to running with a BLRW rooster (and only one of those laying white eggs).
And then there's the whole breeding thing: I realy need to have a broody hen, or a couple, because the thing about cattle and me is that sooner or later I'll get hung up in some complicated cow thing and not take care of vulnerable things: I have a terrible record of starting seeds inside, for instance.
Of course the other thing is that I want a bunch of banties of the colorful sort to keep in an other-than-Ian's-Yard; I've got about a half acre of possibilities.
It's all more complicated than I thought it would be.
