Cowgirl-your post brought tears to my eyes- what a good friend you had in Chloe, it sounds like you have a lot of good memories together.

I had to look that one up. Didn't want to sound too dense posting here and asking what a Sizzle was. I guessed it was a cross with a Silkie.

They are cute I just cant wait, Im sure I'll have a few that will need a home. But wait cant count the eggs before they are hatched..

Well, I just lived and learned. Reading yours at 45% humidity...got me thinking...I thought it was suppose to be around 50%...hmmmm better go check. You are right 45% to 50%...I just opened up the litle vent hole to let some out...I hope this won't hurt anything. They have been set for 3 days. I should have re-read the recommendations. Darn.

Hmm... I don't have a gauge to check my humidity. I just went by the recommendation to set the vent at the halfway point. Hope that's okay. Or should I run out to Petsmart and get one of those hygrometers?

I just go to Walmart and get one.. Cheap they are...

It's only day two for me so not much to report. I just say hi to them when I walk by. They are in an out of the way place on the kitchen counter. This bator is doing great at holding the temp at 99.5 and the humidity at 45%. I'm really impressed so far with the Brinsea for being foolproof.

What days are we supposed to candle? Day eight and eighteen? I have 21 set - Ameraucanas, Marans and Lavender Orpingtons.

I only candle on day 18. But if I think the eggs could be bad than I will at around 12 or so.

I don't think it matters when or if you candle. You just don't want to do it too often. I try to limit myself to three times.

X2.shipped eggs I candle before setting to be sure they are not cracked or scrambled, and mark any with bad air cells or air bubbles, etc.
At day 10 or 12 , I candle again and especially pay attention to the eggs I marked first.
Fresh unshipped eggs I set and do not touch til day 18 other than to quarter turn them in the turner...in other words, for 10 days they go North & South in the turner.
Give each egg a quarter twist so now they are going East to West.
Keeps the chicks looser in the egg.

That sounds gooder than my gooder-than-normal meatloaf & smashed potatoes last night.
I have 2 BIG turkeys in the freezer, and turkey will be our next meal~~~

From what I have read on here, anywhere between 45 and 50 is fine. Many people use different levels than that and have great success. We just have to make sure we crank it up for the last three days.
That humidity pump sure sounds like Darth Vader when it turns to adjust!

Thanks, that makes me feel better. I have the humidity lowering now. I did not get the pump...I just use the reservoirs in the bottom. Yep, I was going to re-review the lockdown procedures.

Oh, that's the difference. I didn't get the Advance or the pump either. I'm also using the reservoirs. I see that during lockdown the vent is supposed to be open at least a third of the way, but do we fill both reservoirs to increase humidity? I'm not clear how else to increase humidity. Seems like just closing the vent a smidge wouldn't make that much difference.
