It's only day two for me so not much to report. I just say hi to them when I walk by. They are in an out of the way place on the kitchen counter. This bator is doing great at holding the temp at 99.5 and the humidity at 45%. I'm really impressed so far with the Brinsea for being foolproof.

What days are we supposed to candle? Day eight and eighteen? I have 21 set - Ameraucanas, Marans and Lavender Orpingtons.

Well, I just lived and learned. Reading yours at 45% humidity...got me thinking...I thought it was suppose to be around 50%...hmmmm better go check. You are right 45% to 50%...I just opened up the litle vent hole to let some out...I hope this won't hurt anything. They have been set for 3 days. I should have re-read the recommendations. Darn.

From what I have read on here, anywhere between 45 and 50 is fine. Many people use different levels than that and have great success. We just have to make sure we crank it up for the last three days.
That humidity pump sure sounds like Darth Vader when it turns to adjust!

I remember sarasponda!

Me, too!

I was thinking about the songs in the official Girl Scout songbook last night, and this morning about the Extension Service folders on animal nutrition: all of that stuff is at my sister's house, where my parent's lifetimes of information gathering is in file drawers in the family room. On the other hand, she also inherited the barnyard and the horrible, horrible corral.

Thanks, that makes me feel better. I have the humidity lowering now. I did not get the pump...I just use the reservoirs in the bottom. Yep, I was going to re-review the lockdown procedures.

So very sorry, it's hard to lose a dog. I've got two old pooches right now, a 14 year old Border Collie/Australian Shephers and his 13 year old half-Chesepeake Bay Retriever daughter. They have a lot of good days yet but the decline is apparent, and I dread it; for me they're the puppies who waddled out after me looking for calves and always found the most disgusting stuff they could to roll in.

To know love is to know loss: it's a rich life that has a balance of both.

My Appenzeller Spitzhaubens go into lock down tomorrow. I'll candle them tomorrow evening and take out any that are not developing. When I candled before, I had seven out of seven developing.

Good Luck!

Hmm... I don't have a gauge to check my humidity. I just went by the recommendation to set the vent at the halfway point. Hope that's okay. Or should I run out to Petsmart and get one of those hygrometers?

I only candle on day 18. But if I think the eggs could be bad than I will at around 12 or so.

With my Marans eggs I try to keep the humidity lower around 35 than on the 18th I go up to 55-65% if that helps the two of you ...
