because i just got confirmation on what i thought was right.

I will be able to sell chicks at the Leavenworth Farmers Market.

see i read all the fine print in the state level and our city level and there was no wording about selling chicks.

so now i have a way to get rid of potentially 30 test batch chicks and later the rare chicks like icelandics.

after i am successful with this i wonder if i would be able to test the limits and sell live roosters for people to process? (its the only loophole i know on selling meat birds)

Hygrometers you can get either at Walmart, or I got mine at Petsmart/co in the reptile area. Mine came as a double pack with a thermometer and the hygrometer.
I candle at day 8 and at lockdown--and even then I just am checking for a full egg and taking out the obviousquitters and 'blanks'.. those eggs'll fool ya sometimes. You might think you have a dud, and lo--on day 21-ish you have a chick.

also--did you let your shipped eggs 'rest' for 24 hours? that was a lesson I learned the hard way

Thanks guys! I haven't gotten the eggs yet. So they have to rest for 24 hours? And lock down starts when? After candeling? I didn't know you could get a hygometer at walmart? In the instruction book it talks about charting the egg weight, that's why I asked? Do the eggs lay down in the Octo 20? Or stand on end? I read the directions they didn't seem clear, sorry I'm asking so many questions, they have probably been answered before!

O my gosh!
You guys should see the mish mash of chicks I have!! It's really kind of funny! We bought a bunch of mixed Cockerels for meat birds, and a few cornish cross, which by the way I really don't think I want to do again! Poor things! they are like little pigs with wings and they can hardly walk and they are only like a little over a month old? Give me a break!! I can see now why some people don't like it. Myself I think I'm going to cross my own something to get a more functional meat bird, I don't know, anyway, there are like 5 or 6 different breeds I think! Anyone know what chicken has green legs!!??? I'm serious! I looked yesterday and I couldn't believe it!! LOL!

Would one soak one's own head in bleach? Might be a good starting question.
big_smile.png

Ok I know that some people may not have grown up with animals and may not know you don't use bleach on any thing but clothes, but, I can not believe the comments!!! Really?? Like no one in this world has ever made a mistake?? As a Vet tech I have seen some stuff!! But, you would generally not hear a Vet tell a client anything like that!! Thank God the bird is ok, but WOW! talk about crucifying??? I don't have any white birds to clean, and I have never given a chicken a bath, but, I would imagine using a horse whitening shampoo would work? I know for blood we use Hydrogen peroxide and water, I would imagine as long as the bird didn't ingest anything it would be safe?? Just wondering?

On another note, I know someone out there has a Brinsea Octo 20, I just got mine and I plugged it in to check the temp before I get eggs to hatch It's at 100 right now and I turned it down, should I lift the lid and cool it down? ( there isn't anything in there) And, do you guys weight your eggs on top of candling? And do you candle at day 8 or 10 days? I have an auto turner, but I'm worried about the humidity:fl? I don't have a way to check it? I'm trying some test eggs in a few days, so I'm trying to get it ready to roll. Any experienced advice is always more than welcome!!! I'm sure I will have more questions in a minute!! LOL!

Broodytood, not to worry. Just pictured a chicken with it's head in bleach! and didn't remember her saying that. Anyway, wanted to say I don't think most people realize how much bleach is used in things other than clothes. Your vegetables are washed in it to kill things like e coli. Even the organic regulations suggest washing salad mix before sale to the public in a bleach solution to kill bacteria. It protects the producer as well as the comsumer. And of course it is added to city water systems. And many other things. In the proper dilution it is considered safe even by organic standards.

The eggs were delivered on the 20th, and I set them on the 21st. Maby not entirely a 24 hour rest period, but at least 20 hours. Next time I have eggs shipped from out of state, I will candle before I set them. Just to see if there are any "floaters."

I'm feeling quite disapointed with these eggs, its very discouraging, having spent the money and then having the eggs arive looking good, just to see that most may not make it. Guess next time I will just bug everyone here when I want hatching eggs.

At least the seller has stated that she wants to make it right.

But how many batches of shook up eggs am I gonna have to go through to get close to what I bought? And I dont feel like it was her fault, the eggs were wrapped nicely, no major dents in the box, all were intact. Guess just sometimes, the postal service just isnt all that great.

A few of us have the Brinsea Octo 20. I'm using mine for the first time and have never hatched anything before, other than brine shrimp and guppies which are completely different. Let's see, mine was reading a steady 100 degrees the first 24 hours too and I was worried about fidgeting with it to get it down a half degree before I set my eggs. After asking the same question as you I set my eggs anyway and it seems to hold steady now at 99.5, so I'm content. Maybe the eggs absorb enough of the heat to lower the temp that 1/2 degree? I also have an auto turner, loving that so far. As far as humidity, I followed the manual's instructions to set the humidity vent at 50% right in the middle. I have no idea what the humidity is though. Zgoatlady suggested picking up an inexpensive one at Walmart.
Smart of you to try some test eggs first. I just went ahead and bought the eggs I wanted with fingers crossed and lots of expert advice here I'm optimistic that I have a successful hatch for a first timer!

ETA: I just remembered - I actually used to have a pair of ringneck doves that were quite prolific and used to hatch the prettiest white babies. Two hatches while I had them and all the babies were white. Imogene, the mama dove used to do all the work though! Finally gave the whole family to our parish priest who raised pigeons and doves. So I have at least witnessed hatching birds before.
