Would one soak one's own head in bleach? Might be a good starting question.
Ok I know that some people may not have grown up with animals and may not know you don't use bleach on any thing but clothes, but, I can not believe the comments!!! Really?? Like no one in this world has ever made a mistake?? As a Vet tech I have seen some stuff!! But, you would generally not hear a Vet tell a client anything like that!! Thank God the bird is ok, but WOW! talk about crucifying??? I don't have any white birds to clean, and I have never given a chicken a bath, but, I would imagine using a horse whitening shampoo would work? I know for blood we use Hydrogen peroxide and water, I would imagine as long as the bird didn't ingest anything it would be safe?? Just wondering?
On another note, I know someone out there has a
Brinsea Octo 20, I just got mine and I plugged it in to check the temp before I get eggs to hatch It's at 100 right now and I turned it down, should I lift the lid and cool it down? ( there isn't anything in there) And, do you guys weight your eggs on top of candling? And do you candle at day 8 or 10 days? I have an auto turner, but I'm worried about the humidity

? I don't have a way to check it? I'm trying some test eggs in a few days, so I'm trying to get it ready to roll. Any experienced advice is always more than welcome!!! I'm sure I will have more questions in a minute!! LOL!
A few of us have the
Brinsea Octo 20. I'm using mine for the first time and have never hatched anything before, other than brine shrimp and guppies which are completely different. Let's see, mine was reading a steady 100 degrees the first 24 hours too and I was worried about fidgeting with it to get it down a half degree before I set my eggs. After asking the same question as you I set my eggs anyway and it seems to hold steady now at 99.5, so I'm content. Maybe the eggs absorb enough of the heat to lower the temp that 1/2 degree? I also have an auto turner, loving that so far. As far as humidity, I followed the manual's instructions to set the humidity vent at 50% right in the middle. I have no idea what the humidity is though. Zgoatlady suggested picking up an inexpensive one at
Walmart.
Smart of you to try some test eggs first. I just went ahead and bought the eggs I wanted with fingers crossed and lots of expert advice here I'm optimistic that I have a successful hatch for a first timer!
ETA: I just remembered - I actually used to have a pair of ringneck doves that were quite prolific and used to hatch the prettiest white babies. Two hatches while I had them and all the babies were white. Imogene, the mama dove used to do all the work though! Finally gave the whole family to our parish priest who raised pigeons and doves. So I have at least witnessed hatching birds before.
