The crows keep the hawks away.. so I tend to not mind that they steal some of the kitchen scraps in the yard meant for the chickens. I DO keep an eye on things if there are young chicks or ducklings though.... a crow once stole my eggs off the top of one of the hutches too. lol! I figured that was MY fault..

My hen that was chewed last saturday seemes to be doing fine. I gave her a bath, blow dried her and put neosporin on all the punctures that I was able to find. They were difficult to spot because she is so fluffy. For the first 24 hours, I kept her by herself in a crate, and she sat most of the time. Each day I would let her out with the other hens, first 1/2 hour, then an hour, more and more. I did not want her to lose her position as queen of the hea house - she is such a sweet hen. Unfortunately, the BCM is now queen, but all the other hens still respect her and don't give her a hard time. The first few days she moved very slowly and could not hop up on things. even things only 5" high. She moved slow and stiff. Each day she got better and better. First 2 days she had runny poo, but that is back to normal now. The first couple of days it looked like her comb was losing color and starting to droop just slightly, but it looks fine now. When I was cleaning the coop yesterday, she flew up to the top roosting bar, so I let her spend the night with the big girls. Today she was moving and behaving perfectly normal, hopping up on everything, eating and drinking just fine (always ate and drank fine, but she'd scratching for her own earthworms today). She looks a little rough with so many missing feathers, especially on her wings, tail and back. Poor henny. Tonight when she was on the roosting bar, her crop looked HUGE, so I felt it and it is hard as a rock. I think I may take her to the vet tomorrow if it is still like that in the morning. She behaves normally, her energy level is normal, but that lump can't be good.

I sure hope your hen recovers, poor thing. The neighbor dogs came in twice this week and chased my girls around, but my dog did this. The dogs and hens had been out together for 3 days, then this happened in the evening.

ok.. I am just coming inside! what a FANTABULOUS DAY!!!

What have I missed??? I am going to go make something with all the rhubarb I just picked though..

Boy, I'm not certain of the best steps to take here, but I am SO sorry you had to go through that! That is messed up. I can only imagine how helpless you felt seeing Ginger carried around knowing that every second counted. It would have killed me.
Thank goodness you and DS rescued her in time. Poor girl. Keep us updated and let us know how she's surviving the trauma.

I was not familiar with magpies until I saw them all over the campus at WSU. I don't believe we have them on the west side of the mountains. I thought they were pretty but I don't know anything about them. Are they nuisance birds?

We call them "camp robbers" and they live up to this name. Don't leave anything laying around as they will take it, especially if it is shiny - like my hair barrett. But then again, the hot dog buns were yummy for them too. They are a pretty bird, but they are glorified crows...but I kinda like crows too. Whenever I see one it makes me think of the Movie "The Stand".

Okay, here is a photo of a magpie:

Those are pretty birds...
But these are Grey Jays also know as camp robbers...

the other one known as a camp robber is the "clark's nutcracker"

Dunno the birds in your photo but again they are pretty

I went and fed her some raisin bread and she ate it with her usual vigor. She didn't eat as much as she would have usually but I was encouraged that she seemed her miss piggy self when it comes to being interested in food. I think the thing that saved her was the copious amount of feathers she "had". The dog had just gotten ahold of her as I spotted him, so he dropped her quite a few times. I don't think he knew what to do with her after he got her. But wouldn't just leave her. I really think she might be ok, but I will watch closely for any problems. And yes I was screaming and crying at the same time. And I am pretty sure it was a white trash moment in our neighborhood because I am sure everyone within a 1/4 mile heard me yelling at my neighbors and swearing up a storm. It was not my finest moment. Lol! Thanks!

Talk to your animal control. And shoot the dog with a paint ball gun if you are unsure if you can kill it. I have 5 dogs and love dogs. But, unfortunately, it is illegal to shoot the irresponsible owners. I AM JOKING!!!!!

But a paint ball gun will sting and leave a DEFINITE mark and maybe the owner will get the idea. Definitely ask your animal control people or police people to know how the law is for you and what kind of legalities you have. I am so sorry. I hope your hen is okay. and I hope that your neighbor pulls her/his head out of his
