It has to do with carbon dioxide exchange toward the end. One of the U websites has a hatching article I just read. I'll try to find it for you. It was informative but a bit dry.

Makes me crazy. My animals have more rights than I do? Now it's my responsibility to change my vocabulary because of someone else's potentially misguided perception?!?!

I say, Look to your own house! How other people treat my pets is more determined by how they were RAISED to treat animals, wild or otherwise.

You have to cluck gently at them. That's the signal.

I needed that this morning...thank you.
Okay, I am back...I clucked at them and did my chicken dance around the incubator. How often do I have to do this?

No way - you just went into lockdown last night? I don't hear anything here. It's day 19. Maybe I'd better start doing one of your dances... Nope, just went and checked and no chirps. Okay 4312, I for sure need to see one of your hatch dances now.

I agree. Something tells me that my dogs don't mind being called pets....just don't call them late for dinner. Not sure who Temple Grandin is. And...not sure what "while keeping her clothes on"...has PETA done things without their clothes on? not a PETA fan necessarily, just curious on the comment.

PETA does a whole lot of very exploitative female nudity, yes.

Temple Grandin is my hero. Emmy Award Winning Movie, Wikipedia article, livestock handling site. There's other stuff too, an autism website, several memoirs, a part of Oliver Sack's book An Anthropologist From Mars. For the purposes of this conversation she's done work in the design of livestock handling and holding facilities which has made them less physically and emotionally dangerous for both animals and people, and toughed out the social environment to get her inovations accepted as a women in a very male industry and as a person with a serious neurological difference- or, more farely two of them, because being in the top .001% of the population in IQ (my estimate, not something she brags on like Marilyn Vos Savant) is rarer than being austistic.

When she was doing radio interviews for her book Thinking in Pictures I heard her describe the way animals saw chutes over and over; I made a couple of small modifications to the corral here and cut about 3/4 of the time for worming and vaccinating spring and fall.

When my son was diagnosed with high functioning autism, his doctor loaned me some of her books to read to show what is possible for the future of someone with high functioning autism. DS was in a montessori Kindergarten where they get to choose what they want to work on, and he chose math. He was doing division! Then he went to the public schools for 1st on and they told me he was not very smart; he can't even ad 7+2! (when he was 4 he noticed temperature signs that would show Farenhiet and Celsius, wanted to know what the C & F stood for and how to convert from one to the other. We told him the formula and at 4 he could figure it out quicker than me and would shout out the other whenever he saw a temperature). The school kept him in every recess because he fidgets too much! I took him to the UW autism center where he was diagnosed, and they told me his IQ is likely 2 standard deviations above normal, and they requested the school district do IQ testing. Initially the school balked, so the Dr. kept adding more and more tests to the list. The school psychiatrist flipped to the back of the 6 page diagnosis, read the conclusion and told me that Alex is not autistic, he does not qualify for an IEP and the tests are not going to tell them anything they don't already know, he just is slow! I was

By law they HAD to do the tests, so they eventually did and were flabbergasted. He had the highest scores they had ever seen in the district. Most of the tests, especially the analytical ones, he scored about 150! He had a perfect score on the visual/spacial tests. His social skills, however, scored in the 60's. (100 being "normal" for each of the tests) He also has an extremely difficult time writing .... he is so slow, though he can tell you everything that he wants to write. Elementary school was such a struggle. Teachers wouldn't credit him for his math because he NEVER shows his work, and many teachers did not believe the diagnosis and treated us like we were trying to work the system. Middle school, thankfully, has been great. Instead of treaing him like an idiot, they put him in advanced placement for math and science and he gets an aid to take dictation for important assignments that can't come home like tests. He is in remedial language arts because of his writing difficulties. He does the same type of assignments as the other students do, but instead of being from remedial readers, he is allowed to choose his own books and topics, so he'' read Stephan Hawking or something from National Geographic rather than the easy readers that come with the class. Unfortunately, even though high functioning autistics are very smart, most do not end up with successful careers like Temple Grandin. Most end up unemployed because they do very poorly in job interviews since they can't handle the social interactions.
