Sorry I can't be much help but I would suggest calling your local extension office or check with WSU.

Thanks CR. I called the WSU Avian Lab this morning, but they are only open M-F. I am hoping someone can tell me if that's the correct place to call, AND if you have ever needed their...services...how they need the bird preserved.

Anyone else had Mareks in their flock? Does it even sound like Mareks? I have no idea how common it is in this area. They started all puffed up and lethargic, then progressively couldn't walk. I treated for cocci right away, but that didn't change anything.

I took one bird to the vet for a necropsy a week ago, and he said there were no parasites, worms, or cocci in the intestines, and that the spleen was enlarged and there was neural inflammation. I didn't want to pay another $200 for a tissue sample to be tested for Mareks, but now with 2 more dead and 2 more showing symptoms, I wish I would have.

Nope not what I would call "bad". The back of her head is bald and has a little bloody but it's a long way from her heart so she will survive.

Was it something she said ?

Sounds like they were well socialized. I'm really glad that you're happy with your birds.

I think the woman I got them from did a great job of raising them to be OK with people, no doubt, but I think they really like having a pheasant-style run with plenty of room and plenty of cover.

I think most chickens would be.

I wish my chicken coop guy would call. It's getting mighty cozy in the dog crate. Anybody want a six week old Brabanter pullet? One has a crest that leans back too much. Getting rid of her would make a little more room in the dog crate. PM me if interested. I think $20 would be fair, no?

200 bucks?! holy moley..
you can SHIP your bird to WADDL and have all that testing done for cheaper than that. Keep your deceased birds chilled, not frozen. Freezing damages tissues.

Here is the link to WADDL, there is shipping info there too. I HIGHLY recommend them, they are very very helpful and will answer all of your questions, no matter how many times you rephrase it. Believe me, I probably drove them crazy a few months ago

I believe there is a closer WSU lab in Puyallup that Robin/Chickielady used once before. I did an online search and found this: http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts_waddl/avian.aspx

Sorry
for your loss and I hope you find out the reason! Good luck!

Edited to add that Jen posted the same link! She beat me to it!

Well we've had 24 out of 27 eggs! Have moved most of them to the brooder now. Can't see anything going on with the last 3 eggs but will leave them through the weekend just in case!

Dropped middle DD off this morning for her recital. She's there all day long for two shows. We are going to the later show this afternoon. Very exciting!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

PS: Julie, any idea when you want to come and get your chickees!!??? PM me!

Reading everyone's posts from yesterday - boy, there's some stuff going on. Never a dull moment with WA BYC'ers!
Broody - the crates set in place look awesome, those were really a find. I can't wait to see what you do with them!
Stumpfarmer - I like hearing about the Hamburgs and how well they're settling in. They are such pretty birds. I'd like to see more pics of them in their new set-up.
Ogress - Nice that you were there to help out with the Talent Show, but BOO HISS on the bad stuff! And I think someone urinating on you isn't only indecent exposure, but assault. Those were some BAD characters. I would stay far away from that area, as I'm sure you've already planned to not go near there again anyway.
Pette - Congrats on your hatch! Now be sure to follow the fine example everyone else here has set and not get addicted to hatching...

Zgoatlady - I'd like to send a lot of light and good health your way.

WA4HPoultryMom - Congrats also on your hatch. I enjoy hearing about your continued successes and appreciate the knowledge you possess.
CL - Always exciting stuff going on around your place - Let's hope Bob takes the long way around your place this time. Glad you found the little ducks!
CR - Good news about Michelle. Now if you could just remember to wear sunscreen when you're outside helping around the place! I wish you success in Elma.
Hallerlake - Perhaps only one little cockeral among your newest chicks? Very lucky for you - and I echo someone else's comment in that it's well deserved.

I'm sure I've forgotten a few more bits of important news - but I read everything and am a rapt audience for all of you, and though I might not always comment, I am still empathizing, celebrating, and listening to everyone!
