HELLO BYC!!! What a busy week I have had. I am almost done building a solid wood 60' round pen! I have taken out about 10 trees, and am in the process of clearing 1/3 of an acre of black berries. Plus digging up garbage mounds out in my pasture. Guess someone knocked over a building full of trash back in the 80's. So there is MAJOR cleanup going on here at home.

All my chickies are doing great! I have had to break 3 of 4 older hens of broodieness! And BOY is my hatchery deleware hen mean as a broodie! had to use leather welding gloves to get her off the nest! Still waiting on my cockerals to start crowing, all the little pullets are sounding more and more like hens. No more peep peep out of them! its cute, but the boys are determined to stay quiet. Cant wait for that first crow, it always makes me giggle!

Anyways, Ive checked in. Everyone knows Im alive now. lol But now I gotta take my DH to Port Orchard to pick up a not so pretty new tracking bracelet. LOL

I was a mean, mean Mom when my kids were little, and fined them a quarter any time they said "I'm bored" or equivalent phrase: they soon found things to do.

My husband has retired bedward. He had a bad incission pain night last night, plus the Fort was firing the big mortars and the dogs kept trying to crawl in his lap: 55 pounds of Griz and 80 pounds of Ruby. I was going to lie down a bit myself, get past the point where my morning meds are fighting it out for supremacy before I went out to tend to physical reality. Even the chickens are in tune with our odd schedule: Ian crows around 9:30 every morning.

I'm going to regret leaving 150 calories of breakfast unconsumed, but this morning is not a good one.

Monroe Farm and Feed says they have BLRWs, but those are chicks.

Yeah, I'm feeling less and less secure about raising chicks; I am having trouble with writing lists or doing even the least sewing. And the purchase of feedstore BLRWs might make me a permanent persona non grata in the Wyandotte thread.

Days like this I miss the Prodigy Rose thread, with half the Grand Master Rosarians on the planet holding forth with generousity and wit.

(Best find something soothing for lunch and hope it stops raining soon, I'm getting morose).

If you are looking for BLRW chicks, I can hatch some out for ya! Just let me know!

Is there a secret cult meeting this evening at Third Place Books? I hope so. I need to do something fun really badly.

I think Julia is more interested in started pullets. I can do a relay if she is.

Is this your bird with the cream color pus coming out the vent?

Yes, but it's not pus...I think it's poop. There is no odor and pus/infection usually has a very distinct odor. Her butt smells like...well...a chicken's poopy butt. LOL

I'm wondering if she has coccoidosis as a result of respiratory distress. The creamy colored poo did not start until a few hours after she was coughing/rattling.

The thing that's throwing me off is that neither of the two sick girls have discharge from their eyes or nose. Isn't that a distinct characteristic with IB and a lot of other things?

Also, checked the 4 hens still in the coop and they are fine, and THANKFULLY mama and all 10 chicks in the shop look well too. I did have to move 2 chicks from the brooder inside because they were sneezing and had subtle crackles in their chests...but I'm not sure if antibiotic is the best route to go with them yet.

It's just been a mess all around! We've never dealt with sickness before and then BAM, it seems like everyone's sick! I don't think I'll be adding new chicks to the flock anymore unless I hatch them myself.

and if the birds are on antibiotics, or milk products, they can develope this kind of runny poop.
I no longer feed milk products to my birds due to this kind of sticky, runny poop, they do not seem to digest milk products well.
That's just my way, others may feel differently.
Birds have a gizzard and crop, and milk ferments, and they have no stomach or acid to break down milk products.
Hope this helps.
There is a vet who sees chickens in Naselle, but far from you~~

We started the antibiotic that day, but it had only been in there with them for a few hours and no one had noticed them drinking it. They do not receive dairy products, but I was going to get some plain yogurt for probiotic purposes.

I do not think probiotics do anything for birds and the whole mess will shoot right out.
They have no digestive system as we mammals do.
Their food is ground by the grit in their gizzard and then absorbed through a very short intestine.
They were never meant to digest alot of milk products and their intestine does not produce lactaid and whatever else is needed to digest milk fats & sugars.
seriously, I gave mine yogurt & kefir and they got the same whitish scoots.
If your birds will not drink antibiotics (which will kill any good bacteria in your yogurt anyway) I recommend the bleach water solution & then watch them closely.
And do 2 Tablespoons solution in 1 gallon of their water when sick, and 1 Tablespoon per gallon in the water when well.
It comes highly recommended by all top breeders I have ever spoken to.
It clears e.coli infections, is fast, cheap, easy & the birds will drink it.
It also does not suppress their immunal systems, so the immunal systems are free to continue any fight against secondary infections that may come along.

Chickielady,
Just so I know, what is the watering method? Is that a maintenance thing? I use just regular bleach like for laundry and add to water right?
thanks
