If you are looking for BLRW chicks, I can hatch some out for ya! Just let me know!

I have some that I purchased from Tamara that I can sell....I was told by DH that I needed to sell some chickens so I can keep the new ducklings.I cant remember how old they are but maybe Tamara knows for sure???

Tif, the BLRW's you bought from me hatched on 3/13, so they will be 11 wks old on Sunday.

Thanks, that's a generous offer! What a great bunch of people on this thread.

I was not referring to here, by the way, when I was missing (misspelled) generosity, but rather the Great Authorities on the Breed threads who seem to mostly talk to each other. I suspect the big difference was twenty years ago (I'm getting so very old!) everyone was new to being online and excited about talking to so many new people in such an easy way.

And as I said, I'm having a bad pain day, and my husband having worse- and our resident offspring is going off to Montana for the weekend to see friends since the first time since she graduated from UM Missoula two years ago. I'm rather worried about how I'm going to retreive eggs from the Hamburgs and move the chicken tractor twice a day, et'c, and it turns me into a querilous old woman.

Apologize for the length of this post... I REALLY need to vent...

http://bestsmileys.com/expressions/1.gifI'm completely at sea: Yesterday afternoon the Deputy Sheriff rolled in the yard to tell us that several sheep had been killed, maimed and terrorized just around the corner either the nite before or a couple nites ago. The owner is a seattle lawyer who only comes around a couple months and w.e.'s a year. The rest of the time, her extensive menagerie is "looked after" by a non-resident caretaker who comes every couple days to feed and water. She has llama, horses, emu, goats, sheep, chickens-geese-ducks-guineas etc, and she's rarely there.
somad.gif

We told him our dogs are in the house or on the wire at nite, but 'someone' said they've seen our dogs in the area and they're going to be labeled dangerous dogs and have to be put down if they're caught on camera, or shot if they're caught in the act. I know noone wants to think their dogs could do such a thing, especially since we've been here four years, as has the 'zoo' without incident, but i wracked my brain to imagine if there was any time they were gone long enough to do such a thing or come home looking bloody. It just COULDN'T have been them...

I felt so bad for all the sheep: The ram had two broken legs, had it's neck gnawed terribly and was covered in blood, but still alive; two were dead and gnawed; and several had bite wounds on their flanks and back legs. I asked how Loki and Chance could do all that carnage without any of the neighbors seeing them or hearing the bleats since our dogs only get to run in daylight, AND how they could do all that and come home without any blood on their own fur.
Deputy said, "well you know, some dogs groom themselves..."

I could tell he didn't want it to be our dogs, but they're the only ones who fit the description and are known in the area. We explained that we NEVER let Chance (~50lbs golden X) stay out at night because she's just a happy little idiot and the coyotes might hurt her, and Loki (~75lb shepard X) goes on his wire if he's outside at nite because otherwise he barks at the wind all nite and we don't want to disturb our neighbors AND because I want him to warn me if there's a strange critter around my chickens!

So this morning about 0530 he started barking and I saw a yellow dog back by the run, about 50 lbs, looking a lot like Chance. I was grabbing my camera when another one appeared about the same size as it's mate, but dark with light socks like Loki. As soon as I stepped on the deck they ran into the north orchard and I couldn't get a pic. About an hour later they were down in our horse pasture and I managed to get a couple pics before they disappeared into the grass. I couldn't see if they turned up the hill to the coyote dens or down towards the menagerie. I notified sheriffs dispatch that I got some pics and the deputy came by in less than an hour.

He seemed relieved to see the pics were similar but obviously NOT my dogs, because whatever animal(s) got the sheep had killed again last night: Two goats are dead and one of the llama were attacked. The lawyer had finally gotten her messages and was in her yard early this morning and actually saw one dog still chewing on one of the goats and the darker one leaving the fence while my dogs were on restriction. Now that the dogs (coyote or coyote mix, in my opinion) have been seen, there is a "shoot on sight" order for them.

I am so incredibly relieved that it couldn't possibly have been my dogs! They've been exonerated, but at the cost of more animals suffering.

AND, if either of mine is seen, they could be mistaken and shot for the coyote mix strays that are doing the damage. I have just over 5 acres that they stay on 90% of the time, but even if they're seen on my own property, they could be shot. http://bestsmileys.com/anxious/3.gif
How can I be so relieved and have my guts in such turmoil at the same time??

That's Terrible!! So glad you got the pics!! Hang in there!! Maybe the other two will be put down and you won't have to worry anymore?? Why can't they trap them?? That would be the fastest way, obviously they aren't owned by anyone??

Glad your dogs are in the clear, but heartsick for the dead and damaged animals (not so much for the nonresident owner, who seems to want to have animals without keeping them, so to speak). I'm especially disturbed that there was a llama and it was hurt and animals killed while it was there: there are llamas which are guardians of the flock, but not all llamas have that personality. And your description of the owner's "management" technique combined with what I know of Oroville and that area just floors me: if I was baiting bears, that's pretty much the level of human presence I'd have.

I think Julia is more interested in started pullets. I can do a relay if she is.

This is the truth- especially right now, because the chick facility construction is waiting for school to get out and most probably won't be sufficiently secure for young fowl until July or so.

Tif, the BLRW's you bought from me hatched on 3/13, so they will be 11 wks old on Sunday.

My math sucks, but that's nearly three months, so that with the usual delays, they'd be about 4 to 5 months after a one month quarantine? Which is fine with me- actually 11 weeks is OK, but I'm short a quarantine pen (that can be rectified quickly, though, I have all the materials except 2X4s to hand, and have learned my lessons from the original tractor).

I can pay cash up front if it helps...

ChickieLady: I agree. It is a LARGE collection of animals, and I rarely see anyone there. I think her adult daughter stays for at least a couple weeks a year, but why have all those animals and only visit 'em now and then? I really hate to judge, but she's just the type to point fingers and blame everyone but herself for the mis-treatment of her animals.

Unfortunately, the area where I live is becoming very popular with (sorry guys!) "Coasties" because land is so much cheaper than west of the cascades, we have a beautiful river and lots of un-trafficked roads, so there are a lot of folks from the Seattle area buying summer places over here. I lived in Kingston/Indianola/Poulsbo for a couple years and apparently the same thing happened there. DH worked on one remodel right on the slew/slough (sp?) in Kingston that had a flat screen TV in 6 rooms, including the laundry. The owners paid almost a mil then did over 200 thou in remodel to live on that stinky piece of water just walking distance from the ferry...

Hallerlake: The Dep Sheriff said there was a 'shoot on sight' order on the coyotes/strays, and Fish & Wildlife has gotten involved, so I'm hoping the culprits will be dispatched soon. Unfortunately, where the lawyer's property sits, she has neighbors very close to the south, east, and west, and only a little ways to the north and it's surrounded by trees so a misplaced shot could do collateral damage.

My property, on the other hand, has only orchard to the north and east, bare land to the south and about a 50 ft mountain rise to the west, so someone shooting across my place (almost NO trees) would only have to miss my cabin and horses. I'm actually hoping to see the 'yotes here again, cuz I'd have NO problem taking them out. Once an animal has slaughtered like that, there's not a lot of hope for rehab.

At the very least, I'm going to try to borrow or rent a live trap because they've also started scoping out my chicken run. I know I've seen the yellow one skulking away before, but I thought it belonged to one of the orchard workers...

Stumpfarmer: I wondered about that and thought maybe the llama got his injuries trying to protect the goats..? They pretty much wiped out the sheep in their earlier attacks, so the goats were the next easiest prey and are in with the llama, but I think they're separate from the sheep. I may just go get a picture of the "pasture" all those animals share and post it, but it's a little depressing...

Meantime, my little JD's Loki and Chance are gonna have to learn
to poop on a leash...

Hello. I am new around here and have a lot to learn. I wanted to mention, and sorry if this is common knowledge to everyone but me, that Tacoma is having its first ever coop tour. This is what I found on the subject:

"We are hosting the first ever Tacoma Urban Coop Tour! On June 25 tour Tacoma chicken coops for ideas and know how. There will be 8 coops on the tour. Maps will be available June 1 and hand silk screened "are you chicken?" t-shirts will be available May 1."

That above quote, along with other information on the subject, can be found at www.gardensphere.biz

Hope you are all having a fabulous week!
