We put our Barnevelder chicks back out with broody CM hen last night but this time walled off the nest box which was too high for the chicks to get up. They have a large roost floor area, no place for a chick to get stuck. The hen was awesome to watch, she totally wanted "her" chicks back. She showed them the food, even broke it up for them. When she laid down the chicks were hanging off her woddles, picking on her face. We were dying laughing. She just pulled her head away. She was so calm with them. I was stressed & couldn't sleep last night worrying about them. I got up at 5:30am just to check on them. She had tucked them under her. 1 chick peeked out to see who was checking on them & then back under her. I might be able to relax now...maybe

Took my daughter out a few mins. Got to show her how Broodie feeds the chicks.

Awwww how cute!

I have eggs in lockdown today. After they hatch I will be stuffing them under my Hannah - she is a bantam cochin. She has already raised 1 batch for me. She went broody again and I could not break it. I hope she can't count or does not have a calendar as she has not been on the nest for a full 21 dys and she only has 1 egg under her. But she is a great mom...whoever hatches is going under her.

I have had 5 BLRW chicks hatch so far from my shipped eggs yesterday and overnight. I'd say two are definently darker than splash that I can tell, so I'm thrilled. Hoping real hard they will be hens!

rain scald is a fungus... it happens to animals out in the weather... wet weather. CL probably has a better description but horses get it and a good anti fungal bath every couple of days among other things will clear it up

If it is raining, the goats are never out in it.. they hate to be wet, could just being damp from the air do it? Not enough SUN!!! arrrgh.

My computer is so slow this morning that I will have to come back later after this pre-arrainged system back ground scan...argh!!!!!!!!!!

Isn't Hannah the one who just kicked her big chicks out in a huff? She's broody already? Or am I thinking of someone else? Looking forward to hearing what you have hatching in a few days!
