Here Ron, check out this thread. But to answer your question, yes, it's safe. It is just clay and DE. Just be sure to get Stall dri, not Dry stall.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=833031

I would still use DE in the dust baths and Stall Dri with sand in the poop board areas you have under your roosts. Then you use a cat box scoop like CL said and scoop the poop. I like stall dri because it seems to absorb amonia and smell really well. Up to you though.

I cannot believe those people leave piles of chicken poop to gather to proportions where the have flies & maggots, GEEZE LOUISE!!!!!!!!!!!
sickbyc.gif

I clean my poop boards every other day, the pics I posted are 2 days of poop in a coop with 10 birds....scoop it out!!
Flies carry sooo many diseases & the stink is awful!
sickbyc.gif

Ammonia so bad you cannot go in a coop??
sickbyc.gif

You need poop boards & sand in them, get a 5 gallon bucket and a cat pan spoon & scoop the poop out at least every 3 days !!!
No stall dry needed.
Attentiveness is what is needed !!
geeze, that is so gross to hunt down products to do the job you yourself should/could just do yourself, as long as you set your coops up properly, it is a CLEAN FRESH BREEZE> Just a $2 bag of sand last 2 coops, 20 birds, about 3 months.
Gak!!!!!!!!!
sickbyc.gif

I cannot stand flies!!!!
Then they fly into your house and land on your kitchen counter~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

That is funny about the poop with the gravel in it

Yes you did answer my question

My roost is alot like yours but I have shaving under it instead of sand. I just prefer the shaving. I just use a rubber glove and pick up the poop like popcorn everyday. My girls can get under the barn 24/7 thats were they take their dust bath. they have some pretty good size holes dug.

I think the three chickens I got in Febuary are the ones that are taking a bath under one of the roosts. All the girls get to free range everyday and they have a spot in the dirt they take a bath in. I noticed even my 10 week old girls are starting to dig up the dirt and roll around in it.
I do have a built in dust bath in one coop. Thanks for your help !!!!!!!!!!

I've seen the plastic tubs at home depot you are taking about. I might buy one later if I think I need one in one of the newer coops. Maybe come winter when they can't be outside as much

You need to move to Holland. My aunt was stunned to see that wee didn't have little shelves inside our toilet bowls for the poop to land on. Apparently they do in Holland so you can examine your BM for blood or signs of colon cancer and bowel problems. When you flush, it is swept away. And yes, that was a dinner conversation topic.

I am not still traumatized by what happened at the dinner table one night at a entire family function, when my Mother announced to all, aunts, uncles, cousins (some of them were/are BOYS!!!)
That I had attained womanhood and had started my period.
th.gif

I remember the hot flash of total embarrassment, so much so I think I crawled under the table.
The whole famalia toasted me (now hiding under the table) to my new womanhood, raising their glasses of paisan...CLINK!!!

The same thing happened a few weeks earlier when I got my first bra~~~~~~~~~~~~~
th.gif

Mind you, I am the oldest, and this never happened to any of my 4 siblings, a sister & 2 brothers (the messiahs) were last.
Mom & family learned that some things are best whispered......not announced & toasted in present.

I bet T-Hi has similar things happen growing up in her Italian family.
NOTE: Dad is a Scot, full blood, Mom is full Italian, and I am the only child of 4 that is blonde & green eyed, all the rest were brown/brown.
My heritage resembles the holiday at the moment.

Toilets are like that through Europe...their toilets are dry & the poop lands on a wee platform & stays there for all to see.....They save water that way I guess....

Now I am gonna sign out for the night, and leave the thread for the night crew.
Got coops to close & I made a Nanner Cream Pie for dee-zert !!!

I have a feral cat.... grrrr... I have seen an orange cat here twice this week. this morning when I got up there was orange cat hair all over the place in front of my chicken coop. I think my cat beat the tar our of him. setting the live trap tonight. I have tiny serama under a broody, and 12 week old babies out there. my cat dont bother them...but a feral cat would.

Chickie, Is that a Blue Wheaton Am in the second picture? Do you want to trade? I just have brother/sister and need an outside roo.

I only have one
sad.png

I suggest you contact Cheryl, she has the same birds, I hatched them & split them with her.
She has several extra Wheatens...I only have 1 Blue Wheaten and am keeping him.
I do not know if Cheryl has an extra Blue Wheaten ???
I have lots of Blues, so we will undoubtedly get a Blue Wheaten (Blue Wheaten Cock over Blue Hens and Wheaten Cock over Blue Hens) so will have eggs....
Contact Cheryl & see.
I DO have 3 or 4 more excellent Wheaten Ameraucana Cockerals though..
hu.gif
..........didn't get 1 pullet, although Cheryl did.

I have 1 Wheaton cockeral, 2 BE pullets, and 3 Weahton pullets.

My cousin Jim Sloan lived in Ione, but he's been gone for years. Nice, nice pics!

WE used to live in Ione, while we were building our cabin in Old Town Idaho....WE as in me, my 8 year old son, and 6 year old daughter....

Your kids are about the same age as mine,(23 and 25) yes ? I think Jim was long dead by then- he managed the Cenex, so most people knew him, but he died before either of his parents, sadly.

I wish I could snort Afrin!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so sensitive to it my immunal system flips out immediately.
My nasal septums are so under pressure than I cannot blow.
Oh dear, TMI..............it is so hard to balance when you get like this.
I almost fall over every so often, no top sill walking for me.
Oh I can't breathe!!!!!
I will still go up a ladder & walk around or work on a roof, I love it !
Sea Saline nasal stuff no longer working...Diphenhydramine is all I can do....OK, enough of that subject.
I can see the little floaties going by the window..what are they ?
Surely it is not Cottonwood..not hot enough for that, right ?

I either dropped it at the store or it's lost in the house: I've gone through all of my pockets and all the piles o'junk near where I sit. Nobody turned it in at the store, and nobody used my most valuable plastic. I don't have any ID in my wallet beyond my charge cards: I use my passport for ID, and it's secure (except when I leave my purse at Rainwolf's). My experience is that wallets dropped at grocery stores get stripped of cash and dumped; I actually lost this one a couple of years ago and found it twenty minutes later in a planting strip, no cash (I had a more typical three bucks in it then) but everything else intact. I had $49 this time, an unheard of amount, and one I can't actually afford to lose.

Speaking of roofing, the elder spawn and I got the wyandotte coop mostly roofed today; I found the missing bits of barn ridge to use for eaves but they'll have to have pilot holes drilled and he and I both needed to go get dinners, so we decided the hired hand and I can manage that job tomorrow. It's really almost done, beyond shop-vaccing up any random bits of metal and putting all sorts of wire around it: hardware cloth and 1 inch mesh chicken wire with 2X3 yard wire for a base. I also need to do a raccoon-proof roof before the chickens go in; the other big thing we got done was to prune back the Grimes Golden apple where it was overhanging the run, so the bandits can't cannon-ball out of the tree and blow through the roof, as has been known to happen. The OTHER other big thing was to put three more livestock panels between the cows and the raspberries, which will be the skeleton of the extended Hamburg run when I get to that point.

I think I found the culprit! A tiny brown spider! I found it on the wall next to my pillow!

He is no more. I usually try to capture & relocate things like that to outside....but I had some animosity towards this one...I am thinking it MUST have been it's fault?!?
