The brooding paraphernalia is put away and the room vacuumed. Mr H has his work bench back.

He gave up his workbench?

He must really like you

The work bench came with the house. Mr H doesn't enjoy working with his hands, so it was no great sacrifice on his part. i wish he were handier.

Their eggs are kind of pale too...

For great layers and friendly birds, I love my RIR and Australorps hens. The New Hampshire is pretty decent too. One of my EE's is an excellent layer, the other was until she went broody for 3 months and is now raising chicks.

My SLW's are pretty good foragers. Barnevelders are supposed to be good layers of a fairly dark (not marans dark) large brown eggs. Mine will be old enough to lay in about a month. They are friendly and don't seem to eat as much as my others hens. but it may be that their feeder is more resistant to spillage. It is my Sussex that I always find with her head in the foodbowl!

I know I just posted these, but here's what I'm getting from my girls. Barnevelder's eggs are the darker brown on the bottom. Not Marans dark, but still a pretty rich terra cotta color. Top egg is the Sussex, then Pips&Peeps Ameraucana green/blue row. Starting to give my eggs to family members now as we're getting so many. Soon it will be time to bribe, I mean, gift our neighbors with some eggs. And yes, my Sussex is always the first to eat, as she has decided she is Queen. Poor Mimi, (the barnevelder) is always last.

Oh! Oh! And an Olive Egger or too! Need that nice color dark green to round out the pretty dozen!!!

Oh thanks for the reminder - I think *I* still need one of those to round out the color in my egg basket!

How can you stick to just 2 breeds VF? Good thing you're an excellent coop builder!

I'm forcing my self to stick to two -- and I might have to stop looking at this thread cuz ya'll post photos of birds I WANT !!

I'm going to consider the 22 birds I have now as my laying flock, and I'll be looking to add Wyandottes as my eye candy

My current flock consists of 8 RIR's and 8 EE's who I got from the feed store on March 12th as chicks. I think that makes them about 14 wks old. I have 2 Black Op's, and 4 Golden Sex Links that are younger, around 10 wks.

So - now I need some Dotties

Oh, the partridge wyandottes are

I know. I saw some that Paul's Poultry had...but I'd have to get rid of a breed to get them....
hmm.png
and they don't lay as well as anything I'd have to give up to get them....

but they are really pretty.

I've drooled on my keyboard looking at Paul's Poultry many times, but I can't even have one more chicken at the moment .... well, I can for the moment, but once the snow comes again I'm going to hate dealing with my tractors. I need to limit myself to how many can winter over in a 10X12 coop with a 200 sf covered run, and an Eglu cube in a 10' X10' covered dog kennel. They will get to free range on 1.5 acres all year long, weather permitting.

I've been talking with Illia for some Araucana eggs to put under my broody.

Shhh, don't tell DH.

Anyway, as most of you know, she's been very busy with her garden and other such things so hasn't posted on here in a while. She's going to decrease some of her flock. This morning she said she was selling:
"A few Araucana hens, a few Black Copper Marans hens. I'm cutting back to just a few BCM girls and my last two Wheatie girls, the decision on the BCM's was hard, but I hope someone will really enjoy what I sell off. They're great girls, and although their egg color has gotten a little paler (they're on their second year of laying, but not 2 years old yet) they're pure Cree Lines, and definitely going to pass down some GREAT egg color. A few are also half Cree, quarter Wade, quarter Presley. Those girls seem to keep egg color better as the seasons progress, but the gloss amount isn't the best."

Wow! A great opportunity if someone wants to get good birds. Illia culls hard for good birds. If anyone's interested, I can give you her contact info...

My OE cockeral from CL is growing up to be quite a gorgous boy. Too bad he's so stooooopid! (Think of that balloon CR described). Some days he is nice. Yesterday was pretty good. Maybe that last crash into the wall set something straight.
He's red on his back and wings, his neck and saddle feathers are coming is yellow, and he is blue everywhere else. I'll take more photos in a week or so.

Anybody want him?

I had Gold laced wyandottes, Silver laced Wyandottes, and white wyandottes! They were great foragers, large, and layed just as well as the rest of my floc bac then did. I thin the only breed that I had the out layed the rest of the flock was the Leghorns...
