a couple of comments:

if you name her Jacqueline, she will have to spell her name for everyone all her life
(it gets ooooooooldddddd, I have had to do that with my legal name)

and there are a BUNCH of ways to spell and misspell that
from Jaclyn to Jakkalinne
*** most girls also don't want to be called Jackie

Josephine is an awfully long name for a little schoolgirl to have to write on her papers,
but she could be Josie, as you say, or Jo or even Jo Lynn

though as a Christmas Eve baby, I do like the middle name of Noelle

Well, that was... productive of mixed feelings. The tweety birds were making "hawk" calls in my front yard, and I couldn't see anything except a patch of lemonbalm and geranium heaving and thrashing until suddenly a Sharpshin hen launched herself out of the greenery and cast a darned thorough stink-eye in my direction as she took off. About, what, somewhere between fifteen and twenty-five feet from Elvis' Tower of Solitude.

They're such beautiful birds, all the Accipterines, and Sharpies are the most important predators on (expletive deleted) starlings. But I saw a Cooper's Hawk fly off with a pigeon once, one of the King Pigeons that my former tenant raised to feed his falcons, probably about .25kg heavier than the hawk who carried it.

Also, I didn't have my camera.

My sister's theory about naming babies is that you need to stand on the back porch and yell the name at the top of your voice (all three names, like you just discovered she'd painted your bathroom with an indelible sharpie*) and see if you can do it without feeling silly.

This is why our children, between us, are Samuel, Anna, and Andrew.

*Save yourself infinite grief and get rid of all indelible markers now, just in case.

Heh. It's consensual adult spanking - and not the usual conversation around here.

You probably go right by my house if you go through Duvall to get to Woodinville. One of these days I will have to meet up with you.

So, Having just gotten nine new chickens, I've been frantically reading all the posts on this site about what can go wrong. I look out my door and see my Delaware doing some weird bobbing/crouching thing. I've panicked visions of panting/neuro/parasite laden/egg bound/who-knows-what birds running through my head as I'm watching her do this weird thing, when an egg comes shooting out of her butt and lands on the deck

. Guess maybe it's time to stop reading the emergency thread.

I used to read EVERYTHING and scare myself to death thinking my chickens had some major problem or disease. That was two years ago. Now I only read and ask for advice when I can see there is really a problem. But seriously, until you watch them enough you can't know what is ok and what is not. I am on a new adventure with my 16 week old cockerel. I don't know what is normal and what is not for behavior. At this point I am just watching him take care of his girls and keeping a lookout for any serious aggression toward people. So far, so good. But you can get too much info and them be panicked about every little thing. Good luck!

Congrats on the egg!
