Fugly Farm

Mama and her 2 babies are out of the small side yard for the first time today. Mom isn’t aggressive, I could pick her up and take her to eat in the evenings if I hadn’t seen her out all day and she was really sweet about it. She’s letting the chicks come close when I move their food and water back to their coop at night so she’s also pretty trusting. She’s been pretty friendly from the get go though. I am a little concerned about the lavender Orpington because she is considerably smaller than the EE chick still. She’s feathering out but more slowly. She can get around though. I was a little worried that she wouldn’t be able to get up onto the patio but she’s doing just fine.

We built a small roost in the shade garden for the volcano girls and removed the barrier that blocked any possible exit; they’re big enough they aren’t going to squeeze through chicken wire and growing like weeds. Last night was their first outside so no more stinky box in the laundry room. The plan is to let them out with the bigs by the end of the week.

Not too sure how well the garden is going to do, we’ve had some wild temperature swings and the forecast says 107 before the week is up 🤬 I’ll be canning this week to make room in the freezer for ice buckets. Not ready for those temps. I put in various starts and then our temps jumped to the mid 90’s. The tomatoes and zucchini are happy, but the basils bolted and are dead.

Will follow up with baby pics later.

Looking forward to seeing photos when you get the chance IM! Who are the volcano girls? I must have missed those. How are your ducks doing?

It seems really early for you to get temps over 100 already. Does that mean you're in for an ugly hot summer?

Every basil plant I've ever planted has bolted.:D

I’m calling two sex links the volcano girls because they’re black and red. Igor went to get one more chick to go to the broody and didn’t notice it was already half way feathered out and older so we had to go get one more. I have multiple ages I’m integrating right now. I hope 🤞🤞🤞 the heatwave now doesn’t mean we will be extra hot this summer 🤞🤞🤞From what I’ve read El Niño doesn’t impact us that way but can mean a wetter winter this year if remains strong until then. So I guess we will see, but yeah it is early for those temps!

Eventually they will but you can cut off the flowers and keep the plant. If it doesn’t get too cold and freeze, basil can be kept year round. These bolted and died from the heat as they weren’t established in my garden and I’m kinda mad about that.
