Great pics! That last is the Common Coot, Fulica atra; the new world one is Fulica americana and has a red dot at the top of the white area. Dad called them "mudhens."

Thanks for the update I will keep you and your family in my thoughts

So......I just wanted to say that I am now impatiently waiting for my young girls to lay!

I thought that since I have done this before and have 3 older ones(only 1 of which is laying at the moment)that it wouldn't be an issue. But I want to see what color eggs I am going to get!

I keep going to the coop each day and looking in the nesting boxes AND.......nothing.

Just thought I would vent to people who might actually understand. Non-chicken people just think I am weird. I am, sort of, but you all understand me!

Right?

oh yes I understand, and it's likewise an impatient time when ONE of the pullets is laying but you can't figure out which one, and you wonder when the rest will start .... then three of them get into the same nest box but there's only one egg left behind ...

I know exactly what you are doing... because we are doing the same thing. I have 11 girls who are right at POL. 3 are producing, the other 8 ... any day now

I do have netting on top of all my coop runs.
(But my birds are let out at least evey other day to free range...)
I also have 2x4" fencing, 6 feet tall, with the rip wires on top, and no-dig at least 12" on the bottoms...BUTT, the 2x4 wire allows weasels and rats and tweeties in.
I have never had any issues with Cocci, here or in OR or in CA.
Lice & mites come & go throughout my lifetime.
best to just keep on top of it with bird dust baths, poultry dust and Permectrin II............and every 6 mo a good worming.
I have ordered Eprinex for this fall's worming..excited about that !
This worms and kills off all parasites so birds can go into winter with no parasite load.
Good night all~~

Where do you order your Eprinex from?

Heading out with my stepmom to run errands soon. This should be fun, as Dad isn't feeling well and we've been getting frequent and unasked for updates.

what a great story!
I had almost the same thing occur twice now.
Once A day ago when DH was home we were standing in the driveway and he snapped his head around and said "DID YOU HEAR THAT ?? A GIANT DEEP ROAR????"
I said no, I was busy with the birds....
Then today (and he is gone) I was just out in the yard & and saw a tan thing pop it's head & shoulders up in the tall tan grass, then disapear.
It had short rounded ears, head smaller than shoulders, was lightening fast.
Then ALL the birds, even the cock pheasant, went off in an alarm of biblical proportions, and the dog wimpered & hackle raised, went into his dog house.
The din of alarm went on & on...I decided something must be circumventing my coops & pens, but did not see anything.
Then I heard the roar...and that is no raccon !!!
I believe I have a Mt Lion.
So..........we stay in after dark !
be careful Illia...oh, and I have those moths laying rows of eggs on my run netting again...went out the door last night & got beanned with a big moth like a kamikaze plane....

Is this like the deal that T-Hi's daughters had and they had to get an emergency spleenectomy to stop the immunal system from gobbling up platelets.
Lucky your surg was over or you may have had a coagulation emergency !!
