Hey Mikeyb
How many chicks are you planning on getting ? do you want a rooster too???? decided on breeds yet.? I know the people that have gotten chicks from eagle2026 have beeb happy with them

Nyrial

I just passed country village an hour ago so I stopped in. the chainsaw guy isn't there now. maybe its a summer thing. But there were FOUR wooden bears in a chain link fence. they were about 3 to 3 1/2 ft tall. cheapest was $275.

There's a chainsaw guy up by Mt Rainier. I can't remember what the name of the highway is, but it's east of Elbe (south side of the mt). There are a lot of gift shop type stores and artists on the way up there...

LOVE the BC Marans pics!

I get my Welp order in 3 weeks... That means they're incubating right now! yay

Going to be overrun with chicks soon...

Thanks Ron, passed on the info. He is shocked and appalled (and very cheap, which I use to poke merciless fun at him) . Personally I think $275 is reasonable if I was in the market for such a thing.

I told him if he didn't like it to buy a chainsaw and carve his own

I'll have the car waiting to take him to the ER.

(I know mine went terribly. . . .

The yaks are coming from Elma - There are two different places around there that raise Yaks, I believe, but we have a scheduled time for one guy in particular to get some bottle fed babies. The thing that feels weird for me is that I've never bought, raised, or even known of people selling babies so young - I'm talking days to weeks. But, it is better that way to lessen the chances of the animal being "wild," shy, aggressive, or just plain distant.

Hmm, so much news going on about Marans around here. Really did wish I could just start my Ameraucana and Marans batches soon. . . Not the 26th and later in March. Aaaah it is so far away!

Why are you waiting that long to do your hatch? Is it just the time no eggs? If its the eggs I have some open spots on my calender. Just an option.
I love Yaks, I use to work with WSU and we put on a small farm expo on Enumclaw there was a few people who would bring them in, their's were really nice. One of the person's said they use to ride them. I didnt see it but they would let you pet them.. Have you ever had Yak cheese?

Uh, oah!
Went to the Monroe Farm Supply today, looks like they got in a big shipment of forced air Little Giant Incubators.

So I bought one.
I'm going to use it for my brooder.
So I hear if you use an egg carton (with holes in it) to keep them from rotating on anywhere from the last three days to the hatch that there better off.
At this time I am bringing it up to temp so that I can take out the eggs that are suppose to hatch day after tommorrow and put them in an egg carton and let the little guys and gals do there peeping.

Would like to try some of that YAK CHEESE!
Sounds GOOD!
Mike

There is a possibility that I may be interested in some BCM eggs to hatch if someone likes to barter for Barnie?

No, but I'm curious to try it all - Meat included. The yak thing actually started out that I saw someone post some yaks for sale in portland on Craigslist, so then I thought "wow, you can actually raise yaks like cattle in the US? amazing!" I always knew that my family loved yaks, but never knew it was so easy to find, buy, and raise them. And they're sooo useful! So, we went looking around for a more local breeder and ended up eyeing Elma.

As for the eggs - I'm getting some from some breeders in Michigan, and their hens aren't laying so well yet. (us lucky ducks and our amazingly warm winter!

) One, though, is letting me try out 15 of hers to test the fertility. Her hens are laying now, but the roo isn't doing the best job fertilizing them. So it is basically 15 free with shipping, but who knows how many will actually hatch. Those 15 and 12 more I'm basically waiting to get collected and sent off, starting the 23rd, and should get here a couple days after.

Once those hatch, the rest of their hens should start doing well, and we'll be throwing in a dozen blue/black/splash Jersey Giants, blue/splash Ameraucanas, and BC Marans.

Edit: When the Yaks get older, I'll of course be giving and selling cheese, meat, wool, etc.

I had seen pics of this and wondered my self. So maybe friday when I go into lock down I will put my remaining 5 of 14 in cartons. So far my first ever hatch has not been a real good experience. Trouble with the LG then the turner. Then on first candle I saw that 7 of the 8 silkie eggs were not fertile. on second candle 2 of the other 6 were not going and I still am not sure about one more of them.

Yaks, & chicks, & bears Oh My!

Nyrial,
Don't know if it helps but used to be a chainsaw carver along Hwy 2 in Sultan I think. It was between Monroe and Goldbar.

Hmmm, Yaks,

Russ- rethinking my indoor goat plans now.
