Not meaning to start a debate or sound political on you all but I just want to point out how interesting this Poll is -

When you vote or see the results, you notice first that the candidate Ron Paul doesn't exist, then that the option "Other" far exceeds the vote count of all the other candidates combined.

Funny how trying to ignore a candidate just doesn't really work.





Anyway, back to other stuff.

I just had to mention it, as, well, it's pretty obvious and I see it everywhere.

this caused chickens to squawk and run the other way ....

does not appear that Jake's lab retriever genes nor his shepherd genes, are kicking in to "herd" ... he just ignores the chickens but they don't ignore HIM !

so I went out to help, called Jake over, and found a chunk of branch to throw for him .. then the chicks could get out to the tractor

now DH says they are all bunched up at the door of the tractor, wanting back to the run ! could be that two more pullets need to leave eggs in nest box ??

only four eggs yesterday, so may be doubles today ? the four this morning were standard size for those hens /// whoever is laying the pink eggs, lays bantam size ones ...

hang in there CR --- just to make you feel bad, DS had a great scheme for quitting tobacco ... he got that awful coughing flu, couldn't smoke anyway for two weeks, by which time he realized how much more money he had in his pockets ...

it's a tough addiction to break but we all know you can do it

Stay strong, and think of how much the cost adds up, and what you can do with the money instead.

Just a note as I'm sitting here alternately complaining and counting my blessings. I had posted back in March or April just before we got our hens or hatched any eggs that I was concerned about our dogs being a danger to the chickens. Our Golden Retriever has a ton of energy and strong prey drive - he can chase a tennis ball or one of his toys for hours as long as we keep throwing it. My Pomeranian is somewhat neurotic and not my favorite dog but I figured he'd be afraid of the chickens although he will stupidly take on a 125 lb. Rottweiler.

After taking the dogs out on leashes the first few times when the chickens were free ranging, and raising our chicks in the house I am proud of just how well behaved BOTH dogs are with all of them. Gryffin, the Golden, loves the chickens and co-exists calmly and happily with them, even when they flutter or run past him. Dasher, the Pomeranian, just joins the chickens while they're free ranging and finds a nice sunny spot in the middle of the yard. Occasionally when we try to get the girls into the coop, we enlist the help of the dogs to herd them in, although neither dog is a herding breed.

At night, both dogs rush outside whenever there is an intruder (raccoon, possum, squirrel, etc.) and make it leave the premises, keeping it safe for all of us.

The only issue I've had so far is that if I leave a delicious treat like frozen watermelon, cheerios, etc. in the yard for the hens and chicks, that the boys figure if the girls think it's good then it's good enough to enjoy themselves. It could be worse!

Just proud of my boys - it's all turned out much better than I'd anticipated and makes for a happy family of two leggers and four leggers.
