Hi Everyone......So it has been a crazy week. I started out getting my new chicks. Ended up with RIR, Gold and Silver laced Wyandotts, Blue laced red Wyandotts(thanks Lyn!!!),Black Copper Marans, Polish and something else I can't remember the name of!! Total 20 hens. Then I added an adult Blue Cochin, Adult Polish, adult Easter Eggers-2 and Adult favrolle. Whew. Then on top of it I met a great person on this board; Maggie, it was great meeting you while getting our chicks!!! Then to top it off while getting chicks in Orting I bought a black German Shepherd Puppy and chicks!!! The puppy well he is 5 months old. Will actually protect my chickens and does not chase them!!! The nice man I got him from actually took the pup and put him in the pen with the hens and he did not even look at them twice!!! Today I finished the week by working on the Coop and making it better for all the guys and girls. Problem is now I have 48 birds between the chicks and the adults.

Anyway. Hi to all the new people on her. This is a great place to get lots of advice when needed.

Have a great night all!!

Man there are so many threads on this - I guess one big thing to tell is by who you got it from. Do they actually know? I mean, for one - A hatchery never sells Ameraucanas. Past who you got it from is leg color, comb type, egg color, and body type/color. The legs should be slate except on blacks and blues it can have black, but the feet should be white. The comb should be a moderate sized pea. The color should be limited to Wheaten, Blue Wheaten, Buff, Black, Blue, White, and BBS. A common EE color for hens is the partridge brown look, a common color for EE roosters is a very splashy tri-color look. Also, Ameraucana eggs should only be an aqua-blue to purely blue color. No green, no pink, no brown.

Really, best to just show and ask, or find out who you got it from. Should be a reputable breeder, not someone who got theirs from a hatchery or doesn't know the difference. Oh, and another really good way to tell is if the person you got the bird from spells it "Americana," "Ameracana," or ëver gets it confused with Araucana. . . It's an EE.

Also, congrats crazychickenluver! When you say Lyn, do you mean Lyn with the Marans, Barnies, BLRW, and couple Cochins?

I just ran across you guys a couple weeks ago and have been randomly searching the internet for my info.
The site i used to identify my (real) Ameracana (that i still misspell!) seems to have let me down.
http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html

Are there any sites you guys find useful?

The three hens i just brought home (previous pictures) were just 10 months and a great deal.
I was told though that the black beard and tan laced were Americana and the other was a mix from the same Mom.
They weren't sure though. I am not planning on breeding them, just having them as pets and egg layers, it shouldn't matter right?
I just want to call them what they are when i post pictures on my other 'non chicken' sites.

I would like to have a true Ameracana in our coop (maybe more than one). Does anyone on here sell them?
I'm not looking for food, just a fun pet chicken that will give us eggs.

Welcome, i just started posting a couple days ago.
I have a bunch of chicks coming in on the 23-25th, 3 EE mixes, 2 Barred rock roo's (were going to be food but we got attached, anyone needing one?), and a ton of miss matched 1-4 week old chicks.
I am still looking for RIR's, do you breed them?

krazycricket: I will have Ameraucana hatching eggs and chicks for sale in 5 months

But, really, I'll likely have some chicks for sale come mid March. I'm hatching some more, and if I get too many (hatching 15, but not expecting much to actually come out) I'll post them as for sale. Lovely blues and blacks. I'll probably be keeping any splashes that come out.

In the mean time, Debra Hartshorn is in the middle of incubating some eggs to hatch and sell, if you want her info. Also, Lisa Cree of Cree Farms may have some. They're who my Ameraucanas originate from - VERY nice birds!

also - I don't know of anyone who breeds RIR's. For me, I'm a rare-breed and/or dual purpose kinda gal.

Oh, here's the BYC thread on the differences between EE's, Ameraucanas, and Araucanas: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=128806&p=1

Our McMurray order arrived on Monday, two each of: Araucana, Buff Orpingtons, Buff Cochins, Light Brahmas, Partridge Rocks, Silver Spangled Hamburgs, Blue Cochins and Silver Laced Wyandottes. Unfortunately, we had one DOA which I think was one of the Hamburgs and continued to lose chicks for a few days mostly the smaller chicks which makes me wonder if they were smooshed by the other larger breeds in the brooder.

This coming Monday, another order should arrive - 5 more Buff Orpingtons and 10 filler chicks, my order buddy is getting another 10 ornamentals.

Anyone else having a rough time with their new chicks?

I will be up in Forks in September (maybe early October) any chance of you holding on to a few for me?

By then we'll have plenty for you.

We'll even have chocolate-colored egg laying Marans available!

Glad to see more people into chickens, especially Faverolles! Are you getting them from a hatchery or breeder? There are a few of us in Bellingham, although most I believe haven't posted here in a while.
