My black AM roo dances for me, but is quite brutal to my pullets. He's much nicer to my older hens, But they will chase him off if he is to rough with them. I just dont think he has the hang of it yet. I still have no intentions of keeping him. No need for a black, though I am keeping my splash boy. He's just to sweet to let go, that and I really want to see how he turns out.

My Wheaten boy is such a gentleman. I have yet to see him even attempt to breed yet, but he has started to dance in little awquard circles. He's only been crowing for a week.

Since I'll probably never get to witness that for myself, what does the courtship dance look like? Are roosters better dancers than most men? (Before any guys take offense, you know I'm only joking - kinda.)

come on down here, Dana --- Roopert does a nifty little courtship dance

he does drop a shoulder, bounces from foot to foot very quickly, turns half or 3/4 of the way around while dancing, then often unfurls his wings about half way and shakes his hackle feathers out .. then snags the hen if she's willing

Well, I am now a chicken owner! We went to visit Cheri out in Enumclaw today, and now we have three girls exploring their new home (one L Sussex, one Eng Orp, and one Splash Orp, who is "special") So far, the black Orp is in charge, but she is still kind to the special girl. My own special daughter is thrilled to have a chicken with "different abilities," like her. So far, so good, Cheri! I ran back to Del's and got the feed, and they just dug in. The Sussex headed for the coop when it got dark, but the other two tried to hunker down in the corner of the run. So I picked them up and pushed them through the pop door. They are all sleeping on the floor, haven't tried to get on the roost yet.

Cheri,
Miracle, now named Rosalie, eats a lot of dirt. Is that normal? She didn't explore too much, but found the food and water. She stays close to the Eng Orp, now named Lula. The Sussex (not yet named), has been the most curious, exploring inside and out. She enjoyed the dandylions in the run.

My daughter is excited to get up early and go let the girls out! Gotta go change my signature! Thanks Cheri!

I know you're disappointed to not have the chicks in the house, but the shed looks more than suitable. My newly hatched chicks are outside with their Mama all day and night. Your set up looks nice and cozy for your pretty chicks!

Yeah, they're doing alright so far. Unfortunately, the shed has no electricity, and the outdoor outlet on the house has no third (grounding?) plug , so the extension cord is running through my bedroom window. Not the greatest setup. How else might I keep heat on them? Any suggestions?

We had the young'uns and their significant others. Nice night for it, but would have been better with a bit of mosquito repellant.
