DH opened both coops up this morning. When I checked on everyone before I left for work I saw that they had all decided they were staying inside the covered run. That's 7 hens, Miss Whitey Ford, and her brood of 5 chicks. I figured they were all fine. The door was open if they wanted to free range and Whitey doesn't let anyone near her babies.

I worked a full day and went to tuck everyone in for the night. It appears our gloomy weather caught 4 of the hens off guard, as the solar powered auto door was shut and they were sleeping on the ramp outside the coop. Weird. So I picked one up to take her around and put her IN the coop. Opening the door I find Whitey in the big coop with everyone else, on the top roost, with her chicks underneath her, as best as they could anyway since they've gotten so big and it's a balancing act on the roost. One by one, I'm carrying all the girls who'd gotten shut out of the coop back around, then notice that none of them are taking the space on the roost next to Whitey. I guess if the chicks are with her she still has the invisible force field around her no matter where she's decided to sleep for the night.

It's dark now so I'm sure fine for the night but I'll be checking on them first thing in the morning. I just think it's odd how my being at work for a full day and a change in the weather made the routine so different.

They are creatures of habit. I think Ramona may have decided to sleep under a tarp last night instead of in the coop because Mr H took the blue cat carrier she's been sleeping in out of the coop. The tarp she crawled under is the same color.

What would happen if there was a gas explosion up here?

and my favorite,

Just for comparison's sake, the highway 16 bridge is about 75-100 feet high.

he/she is gorgeous. I love Harlequins...I love great Danes for that matter. Are you going to have his/her ears cropped. I love it when they are not cropped - sorry just my preference.

I had to put together a "quick" warmer coop for my seramas. They had been living in a more open A frame style (roof and roost). Used old hay bales I got from a friend, packed them around one of the little "coops" I had bought. They are all nice and toasty...now to teach them to go there instead of the "open" one. They will stay much warmer until I decide their permanent winter coopo. Of course, I may just tie this one up a bit more and make it the winter coop...add a light and I bet they will be good. The BIG coop blocks the North wind, this would probably work nicely. Now.....I have to reinsulate the big coop. A bit of advice...unless every hole is sealed...don't use fiberglass insulation. Mine was totally ruined by mice. It was so infuriating. Won a $50 gift certificate from work for Home Depot...it is going into the "chicken pot" for insulating the coop and sealing it up ..... properly. Start on this this weekend. Anyone want to help.....

come on over.

Anyway, RFF, I do believe Fall is here. BRRRRR!!!!!!

Okay, I have 14 Lav Orp eggs in the incubator, along with 6 serama eggs. My little hen all of a sudden decided to lay some eggs. I am eggcited for one late batch. The seramas were such a hit at the fair.
