It is a chicken show and just fyi it is like when you see the chickens at a fair. There will be some other things going on and vendors like me selling thier goods. They will also have an auction and raffle. Stevenson is in WA on the Columbia River about 40 miles east of Portland OR.

Just heard our crows raising a ruckus outside and ran out to the deck off the bedroom just in time to see a large bird take off into the trees. Is there a type of hawk that is gray with large dark stripes on the underside of it's tail? It took off so quickly that was all I was able to see. Should I go put everyone back in the run? This worries me - we're leaving for AZ tomorrow so I have someone coming over every day to let the chickens out and then lock them up in late afternoon.
Could it have been some other kind of bird that isn't a predator?

I'd say about 9 to 12 for an Australorp - she could probably hold more but not as comfortably.

I read somewhere below you have her in a litter box. Just to say - be sure you have it to where it cannot tip even if she steps on the side. Also - we lost one egg from our broody stepping into her basket (up & over the lip) so I ended up removing it. Ours is a Giant Jersey - and she is a bit clumsy!

Don't worry about the loss of heat. They will get up & out of the next about once a day for up to 30 minutes...just make sure she goes back to the correct nest (since she's new) for the first couple days.

And finally - when I put eggs under our broody - she likes to see them and tuck them herself. So anytime I remove her eggs for any reason (candling & what not) I place them in front of her one at a time as she tucks them under (Counting?

)However - I know a lot of people just put them under the bird when they are sleeping. My broody thinks of me as the rooster and food provider and lets me get away with a lot!

GOOD LUCK!!!

Broody mamas & their chicks are so fun!

X2 Whitey Ford (Light Sussex) had accidentally dumped those 5 eggs out of her nest 2 days before hatching because I was using a small plastic litter box with no lid. She stepped on the edge and it had tipped, dumping the eggs. She couldn't get them back in over the lip. Fortunately they hadn't rolled down the ramp and broken but were sitting precariously on the edge of the coop. When I mistakenly thought she had tossed them out, that was when I decided not to chance it and popped them in the incubator. Now I know better. Next time the broody gets a nest box that is more substantial and can't be tipped by her weight.

Ohh, maybe so. I have heard something that I would guess sounds like a Mourning Dove around here. It was bigger than a crow is pretty much all I know. I'll look up the doves and see.

Yep, and my only blue is a Blue Wheaten, hence Wheaten is what I sold.

Good to hear though, would hate to know he didn't turn out. I've only once ever heard of a mean Marans (french type) male, but, same goes for Ameraucanas.

I have no idea if he "turned out" or not, you would have to ask Zgoatlady, all I did is drive the bird to her.

The arrangements you made with her, I am not even sure what color, type or age the Cock bird was....

Well shoot. No, I just looked up Hawks and the tail had broad stripes underneath and was wider than a doves. I'm afraid this was a hawk - Cooper's or Northern Harrier. I live right near Chamber's Creek so we're surrounded by wooded areas. I just don't know what kind of hawks are living in the trees in this area. I know we have eagles in the neighborhood. I see them being chased by crows over Orchard Street and they're plentiful down at Chamber's Bay Golf Course which is right on the bay.

Great - now I'm going to be worried about them.

ETA: Pretty sure it was a Cooper's Hawk after looking more at the photos.

Well, yesterday was the same as the day before where we got in the van & made mad dashes from 1 store to another.....falling behinder as we went.
Is that a real word-"behinder' ?

Oringinally we planned all the shopping in 1 day.
HA, like that could ever happen.
And to top it off, DH actually made plans of various stops on the way also..the nerve!
he had a trailer load of metal he had cut up, rail road ties & an old trailer..all ready to go to the scrap yard.
So our trip got longer...
And yesterday was the same after stopping at Stumpfarmer's sister's place, DH announced he wanted to go 'see' 2 gun shops in the area..so we did.
Our visit with my folks was supposed to be from 10 AM to noon..and we were having such a good time I looked up to see it was going on 2:00!!!!!!
Run, run, run.
Today is more running, for building materials and the pharmacy.
Then I wanna stay in bed all day in my jams, and not get in the car again for a week!

I hate shopping!!!!!!

I did find a gun & bought it though!
I am rather excited about it, too.
I gave my old .410 to DH's dad in NorCal for varmits & ground squirrels..never thought I would miss it so much, as we still have a sweet 16 & a 20 guage...
But I missed it & been looking for years for another.
Finally found a $125. at the place in Lacey..a nice ,410..plastic stock, a great plinker..got 2 boxes of slugs for it too!
Now, off to the shooting range for some tests shots...
