I had my fist coon sighting the other morning. Multiple animals. Live trap is in place, but not set. I want them to get used to it. I got a bag of HUGE marshmallows. That's bait

Coon's freak me out -- darn thumb thing, and their intelligence. Like 5 yr olds with super strength - and rabies, and big fangs like this II

Me too.
Got a salmon head hanging in the front of one trap...we still see preds all night, on the wildview camera.
But none are going in the trap.
We really need a bigger trap, like for Bob Cats & big Male racoons.
The trap we have is OK for small racoons & possums, & skunks, but not grown adult racoons or cats.
This is not what you want to find in a trap:

The spot this trap was on, stills reeks of skunk, now 5 months ago!!!!!!
Juvenile coon:

Edited to add:

LOOK at the cat food can in front of the coon's paws...it ATE the can, smashed & full of teeth holes!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks! I think it has hardware cloth on it.

@VF - You make good stuff too! I probably would have had you make it if I knew then what I know now. I was holding out for a CL bargain that never came.

he was NOT afraid of me really at all. Just sort of 'O... you, are you trying to chase me? I'll amble on off to the side here..' My husband asked if I was afraid of him, and I replied, --not at the moment, I was panicking for the ducks! lol!

It's a very good thing that Cheryl knows the right kind of questions to ask. I could have ended up with a very nasty Puppy rug.

You can pin (quilt pins) to cardboard, too, skin side OUT.
Sprinkle with salt like you are salting fries.
Then a few Tablespoons of powdered Borax per hide (chicken) rub the borax around & set UP, so any fluid can drain, on a wad of paper towels (to get the fluids) in a warmish well ventilated palce.
This does not work in a damp place like a stall or damp garage, as the salt & borax will attract alot of moisture.
Be advised also as the skin dries, borax may crack & fall off, so do not set this up where the borax can ruin something or kids/pets may eat it.
After it is dry, it will be stiff, and can crack.
Carefully un pin.
Any weird feathers can be straightened by steaming or using a damp sponge to brush the feathers straight.
Once dry, you can rub a few dots of neetsfoot oil into the skin to make it pliable, let it set, and wipe off any excess oil.

Sweet! Thank you CL! I'm gonna do this with the mean cockeral! YES!

Yes I am excited about offing this particular bird! Horible I know, but Im sure he will taste wonderful!

maybe I ought to put out our two live traps -- have to be careful what the bait is, because our cats, and the neighbors' cats, all wander through, day and night

domestic cat IN a trap, would be easy pickings for a predator ...

Cheddar is likely never coming back, no idea what happened; Krispy shows up most mornings, spends part of the night on our bed (wakes me up at 2 AM, "tenderizing" the bedcovers), but is quite wary of Roxy-the-dog who wants to play but RUSHES at him -- totally typical bird dog, eager, enthusiastic .. and we have found, utterly terrified of the rooster (smart dog !)

neighbor has a couple of cream/orange/white cats too, possibly half brothers to Krispy ... difficult to tell them apart at first glance

haven't seen any coons around here, but I know there are bobcats and possums and coyotes ... and during the day bald eagles, golden eagles, and hawks of several sorts .. though they tend to hang out over the livestock quarantine facility north of (and a couple hundred feet below) us, on the other side of the power canal ... and by the river and marshes

however there are sufficient rabbits (likely hares really) and squirrels and chipmunks and porcupines, not to mention the many wild birds; the predators don't seem enthusiastic about coming well onto a property marked by cats and (good sized) dogs who are free to run outside and bark

I theory is that there are many people that can't, don't, and won't deal with death. I would rather know that my dog was dead, than to not know if he had been fed that day. The not knowing is so much worse, than the letting them go in peace. I know that death is hard, but it is inevitable. Nobody gets out of life alive. Many people have become such cowards about death. But then I can't imagine every leaving one of my animals to fend for themselves. So that is my thoughts on this stuff.

x2!!!!

Waiting on DH to get his fanny in here for dinner.
We been stalking & hunting until sun down..of course the woods are full of deer NOW!!!!!!

Cheryl: I will post pics tomorrow of the hides I have drying & how I do it, I have one drying & ready to come off the stretcher.

JB::::::::: Ya know years ago a neighbor had a good ol'dog that was lame & blind and they could not afford Euthanasia..so they asked everyone with a gun to please shoot the dog, execution style, and then they would come get it & have a funeral.
We did not do the deed, offered loan of a short gun, but they just couldn't do it.
Finally one guy got sick of the sniveling & did it for them.
I had mixed emotions on the issue, but at least they had the old dog taken out of it's misery.

I did the second dose of Eprinex today in the Poetry Coop=20 birds & 3 turkeys.
Tomorrow I will do the Javas & Buckeyes..and maybe get the last coop of Rocks, Icelandics & big turkeys done, then that is it for worming!
It is so easy to do, but really need 2 people, one grabs a bird in a locked coop, the other doses & turns the bird loose outside.
You get dirty, some birds freak at being locked in with 2 humans...but then there is a hot shower afterwards.

And then back to the deer blind.

The Peacocks are 2 males & 1 female.
DH made the BIG mistake of feeding them smashed pretzels yesterday.
He was in his deer blind, and here come the peafowl..who walked right up to him..and he fed them right out of his hand.
Now every time they see him..they come running & honking and scare all the deer away!

Geeeeeeze!!!
He sent me pics from his cell phone~~
