I use toenail clippers. Give Brian a call and see if he can come take a look at your birds and help guide you in what you should show.

**SO excited!!**

Hi everyone, I am new to raising chickens. Back in July my hubby brought me home 5 one day old Speckled Sussex. They were so cute and they grew so fast. They are now 15 weeks old. I was wondering how the weather will effect them with their laying. We live in Kalama, Wa. I know I still have a few more weeks before they are even supposed to start laying but will the cold weather slow or stop this from happening? We have a heat lamp already set up in their coop. I was told to put a regular light bulb in there to help simulate day light but do I do that before or after they start to lay?

Thanks
Niki

On a side note is it odd that I named them? Well 3 of them I just cant seem to come up with names for the two.

I don't know if my bands are small enough, but I always have a box of extra size 9 or 11 bands on hand.

So excited you will show! No matter who is judging, we usually have a couple locals who are APA judges in attendance- Paul Wiser and Brian Decker. They are great teachers!

Yes Brian is pretty much a neighbor. Well ok 5 miles is still neighbour in my book. I have no idea how the sizes are. They are for RIR B and AM B.

Size 7 is what's on the Am girls.

I can't help on the laying, I just got mine back in March, but I'm unhappy with my girls. They only gave me one egg today out of 12. Of course I think one of them is hiding her eggs again, too. Hopefully my younger 18 week old start laying this coming month.

While I am not one of the most knowledgeable on here I will try to help ya with what I do. I don't use a heat lamp for my birds after they are fully feathered and have some good size. I do use a regular light 90 watt on a timer during winter. I sett my timers to come on early and go off after daylight. I then let the birds go to bed with the sun. The reason I do this is that from what I know the birds need 14 hours of light to help maintain egg production.
As for putting light on your birds at this point. I am not sure. Please keep in mind that this is just my opinion and what I find works for me. Others may tell you different and you may still find something else works better for you.

You NAMED YOUR CHICKENS

Oh my none of us would ever think of that (yeah right he's lyin) I think it would be reasonable to say that many on here have named chickens and

know each others chickens by name.
Also mark your calender or Dec 3. There is a chicken show in Chehalis at the SWW fair grounds. This would a good chance to be enabled even more and meet several from here. I plan to be there as a vendor with metal art.

So....here's an update....

DH's MRI = torn ACL. Needs surgery.

Saturday, we got a huge new stack of hospital bills. Audrey was supposed to be covered under my insurance for 20 days and then onto Zach's. So after around the 1st of September, when her new insurance card came in the mail, I called the hospital and gave them that information. So they re-billed ZACH'S insurance for everything so now we got a $2,000+ bill for her!!! My deductible was already met so there was no charge for her on my insurance...so now I'm calling them back and going through EOB's and trying to get this straightened out!

Tomorrow is the day I have to go back to work.

They're having some "welcome back" breakfast potluck for me in the morning. I don't think I'll feel much like celebrating leaving my baby with someone else to raise. I've been weepy since last night. I have to take her down there this afternoon at some point to meet the lady, go over my HUGE and go over my demanding list of "unrealistic expectations" (as DH calls it).

Oh and Hank ripped his thumb off. I think he did it last night. He was laying next to the couch and had his paw under the couch. He went to get up and his paw was stuck for a second and he cried out...he kept licking it in the middle of the night and i kept telling him to knock it off because I was scared he'd wake the baby...so I looked at it this morning and his thumb is done for...the nail is done and what's left looks like raw ground beef.

I got it cleaned up as best I could, gave him an aspirin and I'll have to dig around some more for some antibiotics...sighs.

That'd be his "dew claw"
Vets recommend if a dog has large or "hanging" dew claws, that they be surgically removed while still puppies so they do not get torn off later.
Poor guy!
