Soooo Cute! I wanted to see those baby goats real badly! It's probably best that I didn't!

I was watching Evening Magazine and tomorrow @ 7:00 on channel 5 there having this hoopla on Backyard Chickens.
I saw a preview, the person was holding some eggs and I saw her chickens running around.
Pretty cool,
Mike

Great baby goat pix. For some reason I'm getting that urge for house goats again.

I wish I could have them, but I don't have fencing or a shelter for them. I've only been waiting on it for, oh, 4-5 years now? When we first moved into this place hubby promised me goats, and the landlord ok'd them. I only managed to get chickens because I could brood them in the bathroom - when the husband got tired of them being in the house he went out and built the coop and run, lol. Maybe I could keep goats in the house? It might have the same effect...

COOP lights in the winter !!! Well here is my take. Our production had dropped off to 7/15 so I put a light (67watt) that came on at 3:00 am untill daylight. within a couple of days production went to 10-12/15.
I agree wiff Mr. Ron I prefer to let the chickens go to bed with the sun.

Well today I used some of the concrete blocks and made a nice walk way to the banty coop. Made some what of a walk to the barn. And after nearly getting the forklift stuck in the mud moved a barrel of broken bricks to the barn. I packed buckets of brick and lined the pirimeter of the out door run to keep the chickens from digging out. I was amazed how fast I used up the first barrel of bricks. But what a great way to keep the chickens from digging out. Now if I can get enough to go around the outside it will help with potential preditors (not that I have ever seen any sign of any).

Nearly two weeks in and BAM - found my first rat!

Just got home from the night shift, went out back to perform my nightly head count (1...2...3)... Flashlight in hand I pointed it toward the chicken run to do a perimeter check and door check... there, about 3 feet up the 6 foot chicken fence was a rat staring into the flashlight... Keeping the beam on his face I kneeled down to pick up a large rock in an attempt to bash his little head, and POOF, he jumped down and under the shed...

Where there is one, there are many. NOW, I leave my coop open at night so the chickens can come out into the run early... do I need to start locking them up at night to beat back the rats?

Should I throw some rat traps under the shed? Or should I put some metal cloth around the bottom of the shed to keep rodents from stopping by?

BTW, My coup is inside my shed. Also, no rodent droppings found inside the shed, food is locked up tight, so is scratch... BUT I have a gravity feeder... so...looks like I'm gravity feeding the rats at night?

Thoughts?

We have some old flairs that we use to smoke em out with. Then i find holes around the yard put bait in then seal with a rock. As the days go by I see less and less of the varmits as they die off. We have friends who had rats chew up car wiring then have to take it in to be repaired. They came up with the flair idea!
