I guess to help the Barnevelders lay darker eggs its ok but yes here's the but, I wouldnt due it to the BCM. My reason is there is a lot stock out there to use and when you get the mossy in the hens its not a good thing . I would think its hard to get that out. Plus on the Barnevelders how hard is it to get the featherd shanks to go away?
Id say great cross if you want to work on the Barnevelders eggs.

well, my hatch didn't go as well as expected this weekend. I got 2 chicks out of it. They hatched earlier than I expected, Friday/Saturday (I set them on a Sat night). The rest were taking longer and momma was so interested in the ones that already hatched that she gave up on the remaining eggs. I tried to save some, even carried one around with me everywhere yesterday. I was sure that one would live because it seemed to be doing well all day. Sometime during the night, it passed

It was a FBCM. The two that did hatch out successfully, though, were both olive-eggers. They're 1/4 blue ameraucana, 1/4 Penedesenca, and 1/2 marans. I hear they're supposed to lay a very dark olive egg.

can't wait!

Anyway, momma is happy with her 3 chicks, doting all over them. I'm so proud of her

I will take some pics soon. I didn't have batteries for my camera yesterday and wished I did. It was so cute when the 1 wk baby hopped up on her back and the other two were at her side

Also, I have babies hatching April 16th (4 days from today) all the way through the 21st of next month. (this includes Muscovys, call ducks, "Surprise ducks (mixed breed) Polish,Serama,Silkie, and turkeys. Oh and a showgirl egg!

Thanks Illia!

La Sombra - Sorry your hatch was a bit disappointing, but I am looking forward to your pics. Personally, I think two is better than none. None would just kill me. And Olive-Eggers, too! Very exciting.

You start talking about those Silkies, Polish and Serama and I'll be all over it.

Would like to try Polish again, but our last one did not do well in the rainy weather:..(

They could've come as early as this weekend, but I'm thinking it's going to be another couple of days (I'm starting to think my ducks weren't really 'sitting' on them 28 days ago, maybe just spending more time by the nest and 'thinking' about getting serious

). Anyway the eggs still look viable, but no pips or peeping yet. I'll keep you posted. Though they have gone into that mode where they are hardly leaving their nests for any reason. I'll keep you posted.

T Hi, I'm afraid I've been losing eggs like crazy the last few days, not sure why ... :-( . I'm down to four good eggs under one duck and maybe one under the other. Last Spring I had such good luck, I didn't expect this. I'm afraid one went rotten several days ago and it somehow affected the others. Anyway, I'm not sure what to except in the coming days. I'm soooo sorry I won't have black ducklings to help you get started. Really hoping someone else can help you out soon.

I may be back here looking for advice from a few of the rest of you later today.

' That's ok. Thanks for trying! I think that I have "the curse of the runner duck"! Will I EVER find my black beauties? This is the second person this week that had some eggs going and they have struck out! Thank you though! I will not give up!'

Hi Washingtonians! We're getting our first chicks this week and I am so nervous and excited!!!

I've just reserved 8 chicks at the local feedstore that we will pick up on Wednesday.
big_smile.png
We are planning on 10, so we'll let the kids pick out 2 extras on Wednesday when we go to get them. I'm getting 2 each of Rhode Island Reds, Barred Plymouth Rock, Black Australorps, and "Ameraucanas" which I am sure are really Easter Eggers. The feedstore gets them from Cackle Hatchery.
