Good info. I will do that on my own posts when I quote but I can't stop having to look at it all when everyone else does it. Pics are nice to view on the original posts but not 5 times one one page when 5 people quote them. It just would be nice if they automatically went to a link in the quotes.
I just cut all of them out of the quotes, most have already seen the pictures in the original, or they can always go back to see them.

Rustler or Chickie, since you both cook with cast iron I was wondering if there is a recommended brand to buy. I know you scrounge the dump for free ones but if you were to buy them is there a brand superior than another? DH keeps burning oil in my good stainless cookware and 'seasons' them and I have to use oven cleaner to get it off. If I bought cast iron it wouldn't matter since they get seasoned anyway. He can have his own set of pans. Besides, I wanted to try Chickies bread in the dutch oven she posted the pic of. Looked yummy.

Lodge is a good brand! They come (supposedly) seasoned already, I would get them home, wash them rightly and then season them yourself or your food will stick in them. Not sure what kind of stuff they put on them originally.

This is such a cool picture!
I was getting ready to post this photo (which is of the same solar landscape lamp that had the cute little hat on Wednesday) when the equivalent ice burden took down the high branches that Asplundh stupid (profanity and other colorful descriptive terms deleted for space) left hanging unsupposted out over the main power lines and the lights went out. I spent ten hours over three days discussing those same trees with a consulting PhD arborculturalist and then a bunch of mail time editing the vegetation management plan back when they widened the road and the upshot was that they were never ever going to do that, ever, they were going to cut all limbs back to the main trunk or a stable crotch, and prune up to the sky.
We were without power for 36 60 hours, which is not a record, the lights have been on since midnight and it's under 60F in the study(edit: went to 60.1 while I was typing). On the good side, everything in the freezers is still rock hard.
And the Hamburgs skipped on day laying, and that was Thursday when every time I went outside there were more branches down in the orchard. They laid an egg apiece yesterday, even though a patch of ice was melting over an insecure seam in their plastic; the flimsy wire and sheet plastic run has held fast. I did accidentally let two of them them out yesterday when I went in search of a support to take care of the melting ice-lake; Suzzie went back in when I yelled at her and I caught Elvis pretty easily, without loss of fethers or dignity on either of our part. And the branch that weighed down the roof of Ian and Sylvia's run went UP and not DOWN when the ice melted.
The orchard took a lot of damage. I have to get a Transparent and one other pollinator ASAP, because true to the fragility and brittleness of its kind that tree split right down the middle. Otherwise, I'm going to register at Burnt Ridge for 60th Birthday and 30th wedding anniversary gifts, I guess. The plum next to the front door is in shambles, but I was taking that out anyway. The pears are all fine. The local native pines are also fine; the stone pines and the "beach pine" subspecies of Pinus contortum (lodgepole) are not so hot. Pictures possibly to follow.
The driveway is still a zero friction surface, even though it's been above freezing for 48 hours now. I'm contemplating the extreme act of using the extra Coleman butane I bought last night (yes, mother, we only used it in a well ventilated space). and boiling water to dump down the hill, but since the surbace under the slush is pretty much liquid as it is I suspect that would be unwise.

Got our power, internet, cable, back late yesterday afternoon. We went to Moms up near Smokey Point yesterday to take showers. That was soooooooooooooooooo good to feel clean again.
No garage here so I positioned the vehicles where I thought the best chance for survival was.
My son and I took a late night walk the other night and the trees were bent over like I have never seen before and we been up here 19 years with a worse ice storm then this one.
It was a combination of the weight of the snow then ice and more snow more ice before you know it they were going every direction.
Normally I know where to put the vehicles due to watching the wind all these years but now it was totally different ball game.

Son and I stood outside the house praying together for our safety, house and vehicles.
We were blessed. To only have that one tree come down missing the coop was a huge blessing at the start of this storm.

As we were in the store at Mom's yesterday we get a call from our neighbor telling us a water main broke. LOL!
We just couldn't believe it.
An hour later she calls us back saying power on so we rushed on home as we got extra water for drinking what we were tired of for four days was no internet, power.
Got water back just barely late last night and now it's off again. LOL!

Lot of fence work, tree clean up.

But so what.

We were BLESSED!

This is not an anti government post but some of you may take it like it is.
We need a government such as what was drawn up by the constitution so know I agree with the constitution but not what I continue to see going on in forums on the net.
I'm not singling you out Remiria[sp].
This subject is about how I disagree with a lot of people in many forums when it comes to OUR PROPERTY.

Those of you whom lose chickens from predators you can do what you want but last thing I'd be doing is calling any government people to GET PERMISSION to PROTECT what is MINE!

Don't know about you all but I work to hard to even begin to think I need PERMISSION, let alone a permit to protect my property.

The only reason they keep taking more control is because we continue to act like they have the right to take what this country was founded on.

Until one stands up for what is THEIRS, keeping the government out of our right to feed our family we will continue to be under dictatorship which will only get worse if we keep going in this direction.

I use cast iron too. The very best ones I have, MGSU got for me at an auction - 4 pans for $5! They are pretty old and nicely seasoned. The newer ones I got are Lodge, except for one Cabellas, which I really don't like. It isn't seasoned well and doesn't have the nice smooth surface which the old ones have. Maybe just need 20 years to wear in (I'll be dead by then)!

Dutch oven bread is the best. Oh, and if you get your stainless burnt, did you try BKF? It's what I use on mine and works a treat. But then, don't know how bad your DH burns yours! Sometimes, all it takes to get it off is to put water in it, and let it simmer for an hour.

This is not an anti government post . . .

. . .The only reason they keep taking more control is because we continue to act like they have the right to take what this country was founded on.

Until one stands up for what is THEIRS, (should say OURS) keeping the government out of our right to feed our family we will continue to be under dictatorship which will only get worse if we keep going in this direction.
I quite agree. The more we let them take, the more they will continue to take.

I will not ask for permission to do anything when it comes to the safety of my family. Because, the government will not be coming to look after them. It's up to me.
