Do you all recall I told you one of my two year old hens was bothered in the nest and laid an egg from the highest roost? I saw her in the nest late in the afternoon but no egg - and then that night she laid an egg in her sleep.
Well - it happened again. Same hen. But this time, the egg didn't get colored? It's our Jersey Giant - she lays plain brown eggs.
Here's the weird egg, next to a normal brown egg for comparison. This is the second one laid in the middle of the night from the same chicken, but not colored?
Weird. Any thoughts on why? Should I be on the lookout for anything with her?
We have a woman in our area who feeds and has been encouraging the growth of coyotes, including one that has mange. It came into our yard and was sleeping on a bale of straw not too far from my chickens. My two dogs saw him or her off though, and it hasn't been back.
No Ma'am, I honestly dont know where anything is here... I just joined this last friday. SO I am a true newby. I found this thread by googling and had to join. The more I can learn the better. And let me tell ya I have learned so much in just the past few days. Thanks to you all for barring with me and my questions. I know some can seem kinda dumb. I got my first batch of hens last April before then I had never seen a live chicken except at a fair. So I have much to learn.
Dawn g the white (on the brown egg) looks like a coating. Does it rub off? I'm wondering it's some type of cells/ tissue that are getting rubbed off the hen's egg production line.Does she seem okay otherwise..

Black Copper Maran Hens - Lady & Godiva
#1~ Those are NOT brown egg layer eggs, those look like Marans eggs to me.
#2~ A Jersey should lay an egg just like a Java does, which is a light brown(tinted) egg.
#3~ Only a Marans lays an egg that dark (as shown in your pics)
Wanna see what a light brown egg looks like ?
lemme get my camera out~~
And yes , my connectivity is wanning~~~~darn Wan!!
OK.That is truly weird.......I clicked quote & then posted below your photos & my message was garbeled to say the least
In any event, what I wanted to tell you Dawn, is the brown egg you have is a Marans gene bird, and Jershies are from Javas
And brown layers do NOT lay those dark brown eggs !
The egg you showed as a comparison looks like a Marans egg to me, not a Jersey, no way !
Javas & Jerseys lay a light brown egg, the type I had shown you in my photos post.
IF you have a hen laying an egg silken covered as it seems, it is beginning lay, it is not an issue from fright.
Anna I have worm SNAKES here !
And have looked into the commercial places to sell them, even worse, how to harvest them from the crud requires so much machinery.....
