ermmm
Just so everyone knows...... Since we have a lot of new people to chickens and this forum.
Eggs come in 2 Base colors: White and Blue
Pink to Dark Brown eggs are paint on white base shell
Mint to Olive eggs are a brown paint job on a blue base shell
Excerpts from people who know more then I do:
Most shell colors are the result of the pigments called porphyrins being deposited while the eggs are in the process of formation.
In the case of the Rhode Island Red, the brown pigment protoporphyrin, derived from haemoglobin in the blood, is what gives the shell its light brown colour.
Blue egg layers produces a pigment called oocyanin, which is a product of bile formation, and results in blue or bluish-green eggs. The color goes right through the shell, making the eggs difficult to candle during incubation.
fun test for those who need to see to believe....
Take a scrubby and scrub the outside of a brown egg...... It will turn white.
Yes CR you have WHITE EGGS that just went to the paint factory

NO WAY !!!! CAN'T BE ! ! ! White is not a color How dare you go tryin to confuzzle new peeps with such nonsense. Next I spose youll be tryin to tell em there is no difference in flavor between my wonderful brown, pink, blue and green and Ron's ol'e nasty white eggs.

Do you all recall I told you one of my two year old hens was bothered in the nest and laid an egg from the highest roost? I saw her in the nest late in the afternoon but no egg - and then that night she laid an egg in her sleep.

Well - it happened again. Same hen. But this time, the egg didn't get colored?  It's our Jersey Giant - she lays plain brown eggs.

Here's the weird egg, next to a normal brown egg for comparison. This is the second one laid in the middle of the night from the same chicken, but not colored?

Weird. Any thoughts on why? Should I be on the lookout for anything with her?

I have orpingtons. english ones. and one of mine for the first year would lay coated eggs like that, if I put out oyster shell she would eat it all and they would be coated and gritty. no oyster shell and it was somewhat better. I have not seen her laying yet this year so do not know if its cleared up. and CL never say never because today I got a pullet egg that was same color as that one. dark brown. it looked funny in the pile of pink/tan eggs. some of mine lay a pretty pink egg the others tannish pink.

WA4-H, I have been hatching lavenders like crazy with my splits and getting around 35% Lavs. I have around 17 Lav chicks so far and 50 more eggs due to hatch so that should give me about 15-20 more. I think I'll stop there. That should give me a nice bunch to cull from so going to be getting rid of my Splits. Hens and roos. Let me know if you would be interested in them.
Howdy folks!

Our internet has been having issues all day....finally working!

Zgoat, hope you feel better soon!

Pettec, hope the rest of your visit goes well and that your trip home is less eventful!

I did end up having 2 splash Marans hatch. So over a week of hatching, I have 5 Seramas, 5 BLRW and 2 Marans. I think I'm going start another batch early next week. I've had some requests for BLRW chicks. If anybody else wants chicks from any of my breeds, let me know so I can start collecting eggs. Still need to call Brinsea......

Hope everyone has a great night! We have Tae Kwon Do for my oldest and youngest DD's. DH is skipping it as he hurt his back (again!) last weekend and won't go to the chiropractor and have it dealt with. Than it's American Idol and CSI night!
Chat w/ ya all later!

Are you looking for chicks? I have a few on Craigslist with a photo of the eggs color they hatched from. Gorgeous color. The flock is young and not laying much so I only have 2 Black and 2 Blue Copper chicks. I am also considering selling my BCM flock. The Blues are already gone. I'm not that far from you so if you are interested and don't find TERRY drop me a PM.
Good Morning Washington,
I am looking for a lady named Terry, that has French Black Copper Marans in Enumclaw, WA.

Thanks,
Trish

I am supposed to be buying 10 chicks from a lady in Bonney Lake. I think she is getting them from someone named Terry, and I have questions about her birds.

My incubator is being delivered today, I might have to hit you up for eggs later, if I decide to breed.

Do you have bantams? I am in the market for bantam eggs. It's so hard to decide what kind. They are all so cute.

Dawng, Illia knows what that coating is. It came up once before but I've forgotten what she said. The eggs had already been color coated, this is another coating that can happen. I will sometimes get that coating and it can be a purplish color. Kind of pretty. Maybe Illia will see your photo and comment or send her a PM. Her ID is her name.

EGGS

Ok, so I got the color thing down pretty much, now, " 'splain it to me Lucy. . ."

". . . how come my Am crosses (not big birds) lay much bigger eggs than my Big girls do! I reckon I'm going to make some more of these crosses (Ams crossed with white egg layers make some pretty eggs) so the birds aren't big, don't scarf down all the feed and give me nice big eggs!
