CR, I agree with Julie...pay it forward. Ask at the next meeting if anyone lost anything, don't say how much (that way cheaters won't claim it). If no one claims...it is yours.

LOL well I will wait my turn. I still have a lot to learn. I live in the city anyway and I cant have more then 7 at a time and no Roos.

Hopefully in the next year I will be buying a bigger house on more property so I can have a larger flock.

Today was a much better day.

We got 15 eggs!!!

Olivia's teacher called me early this morning. She said Olivia is one of her top students, always polite, eagerly participates in class, stays in during recess to help out where she can or goes to the special needs room at recess to assist the teachers with the disabled kids. She knew Olivia had to be studying. I told her that Olivia is so upset over all the bullying that she threw out all her homework and classwork in hopes that I would pull her out of school and enroll her somewhere else. The teacher was completely unaware that Olivia was being teased. The other teacher had not filled her in when this one returned from maternity leave, and Olivia had not given her the notes I wrote to her.

The teacher made a report to the school. The school counselor will be speaking to Olivia and the mean girls. One of the mean girls who had been Olivia's friend 2 years ago in 3rd grade, before they re-drew the neighborhood boundaries and reorganized the schools, came to Olivia and apologized for the way she has been treating her. She said she has felt bad for the way she treats her for the last year, but is afraid of being the target of teasing herself if she does not do the things that the meanest of the girls at the school asks her to do  to prove her loyalty to that group of mean girls! When they drew the new boundaries for the school, most of Olivia's friends got moved to the other school. They had all been on the same bus route before, but my neighborhood was kept in the same school, and the neighborhood next to ours was moved. The one gal who apologized today was one of her few remaining friends, but soon that girl made friends with one of the new girls from another neighborhood, and they stopped including Olivia in their activities. Last year, the meanest girl was out for a few days, and the other girl was hanging out with Olivia again, but as soon as the meanest girl came back, she was mean again. Olivia had confronted her, and the girl told her that she was too ugly to hang out with. She needed to watch out for her reputation, so she did not want to be seen with any ugly friends! Kids can be so mean! I told Olivia to be careful around this girl and not to trust her as she obviously has no spine of her own. I'm sure tomorrow she will be mean again! Oddly the girls mother came in tonight to get her taxes done. Thankfully she was not my client! Small town.

Both of my kids were told by their schools to go to the school counselors immediately when they are being teased. I am not happy with that solution - I think that will make them bigger targets, and it will make it easy for people to walk all over them in the future. I want them to stick up for themselves. I don't want them to be punching bags.

Tonight I instructed both of them to respond to the teasing by shooting back an insult - nothing physical, but I want them to loudly and confidently state something back that is really insulting to the person doing the teasing, and then walk away. My kids liked this idea, and went on the Internet looking for some good insults, and then they hurled them at each other for practice. I'm sure the school won't be happy with what I taught them, but maybe if those mean kids get insulted loud enough for their friends to hear a few times, they will stop the bullying. My kids have found some pretty good lines that don't include any profanity.

I think our school district has a very serious problem with bullying - last year the local HS made the national new twice for bullying. I spoke to one of my co-workers, and her son too had been bullied far worse than anything my kids have experienced. He was in 7th grade last year at the same school that Alex goes to and some girls introduced him to a "friend" from another school who they said had a crush on him. They set up a fake Face-book Account for her, and she totally led him on with posts on the account -- only it was not the girl he met, but the group of girls from his school. The poor kid waited outside for her at the school dance, she said her mom would drop her off. She never showed. She later managed to convince him she had to be rushed to the hospital for some rare disease she suffers from. Stuff like this went on for 3 months when he got a text in class from "her" that an angry ex boyfriend was about to kill her. He ran to the office to try and get help for her, the office called mom, figured out what was going on. The group of girls doing this were all expelled as they had done this to several boys in the school, and had been warned before.

I am looking into the Catholic School option. The local Catholic School has an outstanding reputation, and academically is in the top 5% of schools in the nation. Tuition is $6,000 per year. It is a lot less than most private schools out here, though I don't know if I can swing that. I am going to try. Alex's doctor and therapists had recommended the school to me many years ago because they cater to a child's strength, letting the kids each advance at their own pace. I can't afford to send both kids there, but maybe I can swing one. For parishioners, the price is about half, but I don't think it will be possible to convince my husband who is a card-carrying vocal atheist to join the church. (He does, however, donate to them on occasion when he hears of some of the many great things they do in the community and in the world - he specifies in the donations where the $ is to be used.) Hopefully there they would have no need for insults!

I'm so glad today's a better day. And what a great report about Olivia from her teacher! It does sound as though they've got a huge bullying problem. And I think you're absolutely right - running to the counselor every time they're getting bullied isn't the answer. I love your solution! You brought your kids together and as a team figured out a solution that wowrks for them. Which shows just how great a parent you are.
