18 eggs into the incubator today. Breaking the newbie rule of testing the incubator on cheap eggs first. Strangely enough my girls took a break the day the incubator arrived on the porch. 18 hens and getting one egg a day for weeks. And once the fertile eggs were paid for and in the mail they started laying again? Read everything I could find on tempurature and humidity and ran the hovabator for a week, adjusting the heat and humidity up and down. Hope some hatch.

I just love hatching season! Hope all are having successful hatches - I've loved everyone's chick pics so far! I've got 7 eggs in the Brinsea right now, 1 Ameraucana, and 6 wheaten Marans. I candled this morning and they all look good so far. I believe by next Wednesday we should have babies!

Quote: At this point, I have four adults, and fourteen chicks of varying ages. I'm going to try getting a kid to clean my coops for me. I'm also going to try buying soy free feed. I would like to keep my two roosters and some of their mixed offspring (my purebred Spitz are having toe issues, probably due to inbreeding. I feel a responsibility to help). I have to keep the chicks until I can determine who is a he and who is a she at the very least. Ducks would not be any better.

We have 6 Lavender Orpingtons (H@: 1/17/2012) that we're putting up for sale, pickup only. Please let me know if you're interested, I can send pictures. We're going to concentrate on Silkies and Cochins!

Is the chick on your avitar a lavender??
My ducklings look just liek that. And they have purple bills.

Whew! Just got done doing a full clean out and disinfection of coop! It was beautiful and sunny here this morning

so I got started on it.
By the time I finished it was cloudy and starting to rain.

My BR died yesterday and my Sexlink is still under the weather.

I may have to put her down. I hate to do it, but if she doesn't get better I don't see an alternative.
So far everyone else is good.

Hence the total clean out and disinfect with Oxine in a fogger. I wet down all surfaces in there, so hopefully that does it.
It smells really fresh and clean now! New nesting box installed to. A plastic one that I can take off the wall and clean really well.
I even got my shed cleaned up some! Spring cleaning feels so good!(when your done)

I hope everyone is having a good day!

It was a nice sunny beautiful day, I went outside to get some chores done. I was cutting up a downed tree in the pasture with an electric saw. Planned to spread my composted manure pile in the pasture today but the clouds and thunder rolled in thought maybe it was better not to be working with power tools in a thunder storm and was putting it all away when it started to pour. Sorry about your girls. I have lost a couple of my RIR recently. My Welsummer was under the weather but is looking better.

Wow, I have not been on here in ages. Too far behind to even try to catch up. But I have a question. I accidently bought pellet feed instead of crumble (switched from Purina to Del's) and my chickens will not eat it. I thought they didn't like the new brand and that when they got hungry enough they would eat it. But no, they eat very little and have gotten so skinny it is pathetic So I gave in and bought Purina again. I thought they had changed the bag, but I guess I was buying crumbled before. They won't eat this either, so now I have two huge bags of pellets they won't eat. Today I tried running some through the blender to chop it up, but they haven't touched it so far. I made them oatmeal to see if they were just not eating, maybe sick, and they gobbled it down like they were starving. The pellets are very hard. I couldn't crusah them with a rolling pin. Do I just eat the $40 loss of two bags and go buy crumble? Or could I make it into a mash with water or something? Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks so much!

You have probably tried this already if so kick me; try going on line to the manufacture, they may have a solution or may offer you coupons/money back to keep you happy. It's worth a shot. Most large companys want good relations with customers who contact them. They know for every disgruntled customer that takes the time to contact them about 1000 don't and just bad mouth their product to their friends and family. Just a thought.
