I am so envisioning a 2000 sq ft coop, complete with indoor plumbing, a chicken treats prep kitchen, dirt room for bathing and a garage for the tractor.

I would so want that too....LOL.
Truth be, I knew someone who had almost that. He had the greatest set up. It was immaculate. He raised white bantam cochins and had a room just for awards. Truth be known it was probably around 1000 sq ft....individual pens, room for broodies, room for hatching. plumbing out dor runs. outdoor grow out space. It was fantastic.

Awww cute picture. The eggs may cost a lot more in the long run but they will be so much fresher!

I see those red combs and think roo for 2 of your chicks.

Welcome to the board.
Hi! I'm new at the chicken thing. I decided that eggs cost too much and I want to have my own fresh ones. Hm, I don't know about the cost effectiveness of having your own chickens after buying and building a pen, coop, and supplies! Anyway

Well, I posted in the breed/gender forum a few days ago and nobody answered me there. Does anybody here think that my LH is a roo? They are about 6 weeks old. I'm not looking forward to waking up to crowing at 5am, and I've heard that LHs are miserable roos.

I have a BO that I am sure is a roo, so I might keep him around. As for predator alerting, I have that covered with my peahen. She doesn't like ANYTHING. :) Ooooo, I should post the video I took this morning of her bumrushing our cat...so funny to watch! Also, I have a beautiful black star hen Penny that sounds the alarm even when a crow flies over. Pretty neat. She's definitely the "mother hen". I took her and her sister Tiana in when the previous owners brought new hens in and they didn't get along well at all. All the rest of my birds are pullets and it's definitely interesting to watch how the two black stars "have no patience" with the young ones when I bring them out from the brooder. They are the bosses on this here ranch.

Anyway, I am enjoying the playfullness of this forum! I'm glad I'm here.

Morning everyone... UGH the rain is back. I hope everyone had a good weekend and enjoyed the sunshine. Busy day ahead here gotta get the kids off to school hope in the shower and then I am heading down to Seattle to meet up with Rainwolf to pick up my new rain barrels. First time I am meeting up with anyone from chicken chat.

Well I better get going and get the ball rolling. I hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Oh Rain barrels. Will you be using them for your watering your chickens? I was thinking of this last night and wanted to do some research to see how that works. I'd love to hear more, if thats your intended use.

Have a great day!!!

Hi Teva,
I'm pretty new too, so not really much help with sexing chicks. But welcome to the group.

Um I might. I never had rain barrels before so we will have to see I got them mainly for my garden but I dont see why you couldnt use the water for your chickens as long as it was fresh and not sitting in the barrel forever and it would have to be filtered. But I will keep everyone posted. These are huge 275 gallon barrels that were used for somin else and we are gonna make them into to rain barrels. SO once I get them cleaned and in place then I will post pictures. But I know a lot of ppl have barrels here and probably know more then I.

I ran into SadieSue yesterday at Macy's in Moscow. Last place I expected to run into a fellow chicken person.

It's true - many of you know I was in Pullman for Mom's weekend. We'd heard that the Macy's in Moscow was having a big shoe sale so in between activities Lily and I went to the mall. While we were looking around, sure enough, I glanced over and there was ReiMiraa by the cosmetics counter! Sorry if we caught you off guard Rachel - I know it was a pretty random encounter. Out of the thousands of visiting moms and the hundreds of places we could have been at that exact moment, there we were within just a few feet of you. I had to say hello! Hope the rest of your weekend went well.

Good morning!!

I'm so happy that my two little girls are moved in and adjusted so well with the 'bigger girls'. It is really funny to see the size difference that two weeks makes in sizes of the chicks! Especially the Banty. We call her the midget.

A few days ago I went to check on the chicks and found the Salmon Faverolle, on top of the waterer. She was just sitting there so I scooped her up and put her on floor again. Thought maybe it was a fluke thing since they were just starting to 'stretch their wings'. Next day, there she was again. I had more time to watch so sat there for a bit and then watched her hop down....and then flap her wings and jump up there again. Yesterday she spent all morning going back and forth. I told DH it was time to put a little perch in there. So he quickly put together something, with scrap wood from the project he was working on. I put it in there, yesterday afternoon and was so funny to watch her go back and forth and the other three taking their attempts and finally figuring it out. It's become a big hit!

NOW, we realize with them growing and us adding more 'things' to their brooder; its time to upgrade to a bigger brooder for now. Currently in a rubber made tote with a: waterer, feeder, shoebox lid for us to add food for them to peck and scratch, and now the roost. LOL so guess we need to come up with a better plan for next few weeks.

I've only been at this for a little over a week and LOVING it!!
