Reading about treating for mites made me think of something. I'm new, yes. I'm fundamentally lazy as well so I've not dug through all of these posts to ensure that I know what the eff I'm talking about...

What I do know for a fact is that pyrethroids - all substances derived naturally or synthetically from crysanthemums - are a substance to which a lot of people are allergic. They skulk about under all kinds of names (check http://www.epa.gov/oppsrrd1/reevaluation/pyrethroids-pyrethrins.html for more info and a decent but not complete list of names) and in all kinds of products.

I happen to be extremely allergic to pyrethroids. My eyes itch and swell and make me want to remove them and run them under cold water. I sneeze, wheeze, get snot all over the place, have asthma attacks, and get incredibly cranky. My husband? He could probably do a line of the stuff and be fine. It's a finicky substance in choosing its victims.

I'm confident in the above statements. Where the researching the threads might have come in handy prior to posting something:

I remember someone posting about allergies to her chickens and that it was worse when cleaning the coop rather than just hanging with the chicks. Perhaps an allergy to pyrethroids could be the culprit? If it's not a severe allergy, the amount that would be on the chickens would be far less than the amount kicked up and swirling around when cleaning the coop.

I'm curious to find out if this possiblilty has been explored. If it has and I should've done my research, feel free to belittle me.

Sounds like an interesting theory. I have loads of allergies and believe that some folks might have trouble with this. When I clean the coop out, I sneeze from the hay I use for their litter. But this is interesting-- I have one bonus Sultan (?) chick that makes me sneeze terribly when I pick him up and he flaps his wings. My eyes water when I bend over his lonely corner of the brooder. None of the other ones do this to me. Weird. I am used to allergies being weird. As i type this, my right eye is itching and watering. ....WTH??......

Psychosomatic allergic reaction?

I'm also ridiculously allergic to alfalfa so any hay I'm around needs to be alfalfa-free.

Here is the first chick from our incubator hatch!

Congrats on a very successful hatch! I'll bet the kids are excited. Did you enjoy hatching using an incubator this time?

Okay, I am now talking to myself. Honest I showered. I guess I had better get off this before I get in trouble. Will someone come and build me a coop? Please!!!! I just need it studded/framed in...I can finish it. I just don't know how to do....no mater how much reading I do on how to do it.

Alright...night all.

I sent you a PM.

In Monroe I bought a silver Ameraucana pullet from Pips&Peeps. She gave me a fertile egg to take home. A nice little bonus for going to the show I thought! I put the egg in my pocket, then in the cup holder of the car for the drive home. Then it sat on the kitchen table in an egg carton, then in the garage. I turned it 3 times a day. I was waiting for the Ameraucana to lay more eggs so I could set them all together in the incubator, but do you think she'd give me anymore? Nada. So 10 days after I brought it home I set it.
Not wanting to waste ALL of the space in my Brinsea, I contacted zgoatlady and she was nice enough to share 6 of her Wheaten Marans eggs with me, so I set those the following day.
Day 21 for the Ameraucana - the "in my pocket, in my cup holder, kitchen table, garage", lonely 10 day old egg - and this morning I woke up to a "cheep!"
What an amazing thing hatching is! Hopefully those 6 other babies will be greeting me tomorrow morning.

That was me. I don't use pyrethroids on my chickens (or in my garden), but thank you for thinking of me.
