Ohmygosh I am so sorry. Makes me sick to hear this. It's my worst fear right now which is why my girls have been confined to their enclosed run for the past month. How are the kids taking it? Do you know which neighbor's dogs? Are they aware?
Yes, my son whom I never thought would take the imitative to do anything on his own was just amazing! Shasta had already chased the other dogs off, and when Alex came home, Shasta was nudging a dead hen with her nose and kept running back and forth from her to a Barnevelder that was in obvious shock. There was a big pile of barred rock feathers where the dogs had attacked a hen. Alex locked Shasta up, he told me that he thought Shasta had killed a Ben and asked me not to get upset. An hour before he came home, I had heard a vicious dog fight coming from our yard, but from where I was stuck, I could not see it. Alex was really concerned about Olivia and did not want her to come a cross the disturbing scene. The first dead hen he found was her favorite, Angel, the white EE who had hatched out our BCM's from CGG. He bagged up Angel and put her in the trash. Then he found the injured Barnie and put her in a crate in the house, but when he reached in to get her some food and water, she seizured and died, so he put her with the other dead hen. He then cleaned up the feathers from the missing Barred Rock, and told me that quite a few other hens and roosters were missing hunks of feathers. Olivia came home, and despite Alex's heroic efforts, she was extremely upset. But she had the sense to walk the fenceline because she was sure that Shasta was not guilty. She found the orchard gate in the way back of our property wide open. After the last freeze-thaw, the 2 gate panels no longer meet up. She pushed big rocks up against it. This gate goes out to a large forested greenbelt. While out there she saw one neighbors black Dod and another neighbors ridgeback and their Jack Russel prowling the fenceline. When she secured the gate, she told the neighbors. They called and felt terrible. Olivia was crying profusely and was very upset. They had no idea what was going on here either and have since been sending over delicious home-made dinners for our family. I got so done out Monday to properly repair the gate and block off all the areas where the local wildlife have been digging at our fenceline. Best of all, I see the invisible fence people out at both neighbors properties .

I tried to let my chickens free range. My neighbors did for a few hours a day when they were home. We did fine for a while and then the coyotes discovered my chickens and they got 3 with in a week. I now let them out in a temporary electric fenced area with a kit that I bought from Ken cove. It keeps them from going too far, the dogs from chasing them and if I am home the preditors from grabbing a quick meal. I dont let them out unless I am home. If they fly over the fence then they are fair game and I have lost 1 hen and 2 roos in the year since I started this system. My neighbors and I have seen bobcats and coyotes in broad daylight so don't think they wont be checking out your flock.

Hi everyone!

I'm new to this thread (and to BYC) but have a quick question. How many in Western WA (I'm in the Gig Harbor area) successfully free range their flocks (without fencing) during the day? I hope to free range during the day (sometimes we'll be home, sometimes not) by using a chicken door, and they'll be locked in the coop at night. So my concern is about daytime predators.

Hiya, EricaD,

I'm on Whidbey Island - we allow our standard sized flock to free range during the day in a fenced yard that they can and do escape on a fairly regular basis. They generally stick to our property and our neighbor's, much to his delight. We do have three flock guardian dogs, so they are protected while in the yard (they don't fit through the fence slats, thankfully). We have Bald Eagles and falcons (not sure the types). So far, so good. *cross fingers*

We do keep the bantams (Silkies, Frizzles and Sizzles) in breeding pens with raptor netting. They are too conveniently sized for my comfort. :D

Good grief Ogress, what an ordeal you've been through! Glad you're on the mend, and even with friends and neighbors helping out, please let us BYC peeps know if you need anything.

I'm supposed to be at work in 10 minutes but am having trouble pulling myself away from the incubator. So far I've got the Ameraucana chick who hatched yesterday and am up to 4 wheaten Marans, one zipping and I think one pipping. Fingers crossed by the end of today I'll have all 6 out. Thank you zgoatlady - these were some good eggs!
Sounds like a very successful hatch, SadieSue! Please share pictures of the new babies when you can.

Kinda mad.... I ordered some Cornish Rocks from a local feed store awhile back and they were suppose to be in today. Well I called to make sure they had them and I was informed that their hatchery is sold out for the season and they will no longer be getting anymore more. REALLY??? UGH now what am I suppose to do?

This is for CR:

So a few days ago we were driving along & saw an older GMC P/U for sale, baby poo yellow, a 70s series, 3/4 T axles, stick, a good farm truck.
So we stopped & looked and I had an ice tea as usual, out walks a teen girl, phone glued to 1 ear (as usual) and DH was looking at the motor I asked her what size engine is this ?

Ready for this ????????????????????

She says, I think it is a 357....................and sho' nuff I blasted laughter out & could not stop laughing, either could DH...........I said are ya sure it isn't a 308 or a 270 ?????????????????
Finally she asked what was so funny with a grin on her face, and we explained it to her..............so funny, all 3 of us were hardly able to walk & hold the tears back it was so funny !
No we did not buy it......still laughing all the way home.
