At one point I had two drakes and only one hen (not planned!). The boys actually got along pretty well. They didn't grow up together either, so I agree that it's not a rare occurance. I've also heard that drakes will get along fine together as long as there are no females to fight over.

Lilstar, I wouldn't worry about your little duckies too much at this point. Just wait and see what happens.

Hi Totalcolour! The Anconas are doing great. They are the tamest, sweetest little ducklings I've ever had, except for maybe my Pekins.

Well, we have different breeds of ducks, and we had two especially close drakes (Welsh Harlequins) that stuck together like the proverbial glue. We also have two Muscovies that are close (we got rid of the others that were quarrelsome). So I do think that males can get along.

We have had fawn runner males that were close as well. All of the ducks in question were raised together so I think that has something to do with their closeness. The ONLY times we have had problems is during breeding season, and there are the inevitable fights that end quickly. Othrwise, they get along well. So I don't think it's a rare or anecdotal thing - we experience harmony with different breeds and have for several years.

HI,
I live on Bainbridge Island and am delighted to know there are so many Washington State members here. I bought my chicks from Bay Hay and Feed (our local feed store) end of Feb. I have four Australorps, two Marans and two Americaunas. This is my first excursion into chickens. I also have six small dogs, five of whom are rescues. A friend built me a fancy chicken coop and since I live on acreage, they have a big fenced run. We have a problem here with raccoons, weasels, minks and coyotes so my coop has an internal small run that is very well protected.
I hope there are other Bainbridge folks here as well.
Annette

Do you have any left now ?

I have six that are all between 8 months and a year and are healthy and laying great. I am getting 2 of yours from Ron. 1 Java, and 1 Buckeye. I am kind of excited! They are beautiful birds! Sorry, he is a little closer than you.

Those of you near there here is a whole lot of sand for your runs. I use sand on the run then go buy a bale of straw which they love to spend their time going through. Throw bird seed or other food in that straw and they be busy for hours every day. After so many months then take out the combo of straw poop sand, leaving some sand, into the garden or compost pile depending on time of year this system works great. Then grow food crops for the chickens from these materials and the circle continues.

:love  Oh so cute !!!!!!!!!!!! Never anything as pure white as a new calf !!!!!!!!

I'm going to try to get a cleaner pic today- nobody looks their best still wet from being born. I need to record her tag number; digital photography makes it so much easier to keep records!

I've got two more births to go- a young cow who was terribly thin last spring and a rolly-polly half-Hereford first calf heifer. And the bull should be over in the next ten days or so. Before that I need to check every inch of the line fence and make sure it's secure, since when the sap started running a whole lot of new snowbreaks came down. We know that the road fence needs completely replaced, as it broke on both ends, and the middle of the driveway fence is sagging and has to be restretched. And oh, yeah, I really need to finish the Hamburg extension!

We breed Frizzles here. From we've seen the smooth-feathered chickens are complete sweethearts (and great broodies, I have one sitting on a huge clutch right now). Frizzles tend to be a bit high on the Henitude scale in our experience!

We're hoping for some Sizzles this Summer, having put some Silkie hens in with our Frizzle rooster and a few Frizzle hens in with our Silkie roo.

So I just got back from putting my favorite hen down. My Golden Sexlink "Lucy" was always my little buddy. She had massive tumors in her abdomen and there was nothing we could do for her. She was suffering so I took her to Dr. Bruce and had them put her to sleep. I just couldn't do it myself. So that's the last of my original three. I am going to bury her next to my BR, her "sister".

Congrsts on the hatch Z! Sound like you will be over run!

How many Sizzles do you thing you will have? :)

KMHunter...so sorry for your loss.
