Oystershell YES!

I have started just buying a bag of each 25-50lbs and putting them in a large container with holes in it to let the water out. They eat freely from it and sometimes scratch, but it has lasted a long time, so I don't worry about it... Less than $20 for probably what is a years supply for 12 hens.

(I don't have all of the chickens now, so I will answer what worked when I did have more chickens)

Personally I want my chickens to have access to food constantly throughout the day. Since they free range, having their layer available all day is better in my opinion, because at least then they eat a little bit of it. Mostly they want worms, grass and cabbage, fruit and yoghurt.

I was reminded by a friend that chickens used to live quite well on corn and free range for years. So don't stress the food too much. Just make it available. One of my girls (a buff orp) hated all layer food, and would just live on ranged foods and scratch..... She layed an average of 5 eggs a week, so she wasn't suffering any ill effects in that department.

But get the oystershell in there. It builds strong eggs. They won't over eat it.

Thank you Weaveagarden! I'll pick up some oyster shell the next time I go to the feed store.

I dont know details on your entire situation, but Im glad you were able to keep some of your flock.

WELL, WELL, WELL, look at that !! OLD weavey garden is back

.

I was getting 7 or 8 (out of 8) eggs a day until the middle of May. Then it just dropped to 4-6 a day, over night. I have a RIR that hasn't laid in 10 days and a leghorn that hasn't laid in 14 days. They BOTH seem normal and healthy. I did have a vet (visiting my landlord) say that my leghorn was OVER weight. So she's on a diet.

WELCOME back weaveagarden

For those of you new bees ( a month or less) on here . Weaveagarden has been giving me a BAD time because I have FOUR hens that lay WHITE eggs. I also have four brown layers. When I got Two new white leghorns, I named one after her and another old friend (??) that doesn't seem to be on here anymore

I have a quick question!

Is there a place I can take a deceased bird around here (Western WA) to have a necropsy done? I've lost two from the same source and if I get anymore losses I'd kind of like to know what the heck I'm dealing with! I've read up on so many diseases my head is spinning and I've spent so much time on the internet pretty much nothing else has gotten done!

TIA

LOL....the white egg shell competition is hilarious. I can just see the egg shells flying now. White...no green...no white....no brown....no (what other colored eggs are there?). LMBO

I have 12 BR, what colored eggs will they be laying when they get to that age? that way I know which team to root for. Also, what age do chickiepoos start laying?

On that note....when do I take babies off of the baby start & grow and change to grownup food? I have a roo and hen born in February and my chicks I got from the feedstore in March.

I can't eat a half dozen white eggs Ron! I only have one white egg layer right now since the other is on antibiotics, I've been tossing hers to be safe.

I'll hand it to them though.. they're consistent, I don't think that either has ever missed a day except the first day I had her on meds and locked up for her bumblefoot (which we're STILL fighting, and now I have a duck with it too

)

Thanks for the well wishes, luckily the girls are in MI with grandma and grandpa, so its just us and the poultry. And the rooster in my ears at 6am. Just fighting a head cold, pretty sure I opened myself up to it last week while I was loading Super Reg up with cinder blocks for the pig roast pit.

Speaking of, who's still planning on coming next weekend?

All we ask is you bring a dish to pass, and your own poison if you're going to indulge. Tenting over is welcome, kids are welcome.. and that's about it. We're low on lawn chairs, so a folding chair might be a good idea. and

that it doesn't decide to pour on us. PM me if you need details/address/phone - I don't care to post it out in the open.

Weave.. if you don't mind a twin size bed we have an extra room, possibly two if our friend from Oregon doesn't show up.

Is the who's planning on coming over next weekend an open invite??
