this is a good question..we have a small pack of crows that hang out and eat in the compost pile, considering I have seen hawks within a cityblock of my place I kind of like the crows hanging out

Well, this is exactly how diseases are passed. The quail, crows and others fly in and spread it all about by their poo...and by touch.
So much so that the Dept Wildlife highly discourages feeding birds right now as they all gather at feeders and exchange diseases.
On Crows...I have seen crows land, and walk right into a hencoop, and steal eggs, and fly away.
I also have heard they can land, walk in and steal a baby chick or young pullet.
They gotta eat too, and are extremely smart, and oppurtunistic as well...leave your sandwich on the table and go inside for the mustard.....POOF !
Who took my sandwich ?

DH says he likes to watch them grab a few walnuts and fly way up and drop them on the asphalt, then fly down to eat the bits, and if that isn't enough we have seen them all gather by the side of the road and put walnuts in the street, and they waite for a car to run them over...then walk out and dine on the nut meats.
Hysterical, huh ?

I would try to keep all other birds away from mine, and not let them walk about and poo where my birds will be either.

Regarding missing sandwich: Soooooo have been there, only we lost marshmellows to magpies. I have a wild bird feeder up in the backyard and the chickens like to clean up under it....the quail also come in and clean up under it. I had never really thought of it. Now I am concerned.

I am going to vaccinate my last few chicks of the season for Marek's Saturday afternoon if anybody wants to come over for a vaccine party. Whee! Bring your party hats. (Just kidding all you literalists- only bring your chicks....)

This looks like my baby run, except for the bird net over the entire 1/2 acre, tower with spotlight and guard with machine gun turret....fence wire bent down over the ground so no digs....
