Just wanted to pop through and say that William is doing a bit better. I think it's not going to be super bad, just yesterday was a bit unbearable. He didn't sleep much last night so I stayed upstairs (my bedroom is in the basement) and slept on the guest bed, some with him, some alone. Poor guy! But he ate a little breakfast and now has an 'S' sticker on his forehead and is running around yelling "Super Stegman!" (our last name
lau.gif
) so he must not feel too terrible today! Jeanine seems the same today as yesterday and I don't think she's getting worse, thank God!

Now I'm just perusing around, looking into incubators, figuring out if I should get one for next spring or try to hatch our own with the new roo coming next week. Did I mention I'm DYING to go get him!? But I have to wait for the run to be built so I have a safe place to keep him. He'll probably end up in a rubbermaid (poor guy, what a sucky coop huh?! LOL) inside the run, while the girls have the coop and backyard to themselves for a few days/weeks.

Let me start off by saying that today I am going to quit smoking!!!!! I had quit back in 2007 and had no propblem with quiting. I recently started up again durring a very stressful and emotional time for me but have decided because my kids don't like me smoking, it is costing me a lot of money that could have been spent on more chickens, (lol) and the other night I woke up (thank god) having an athsma attack, that maybe it is time again to be stink free! So please I am sorry if I post to much today, but I have nothing to build with and not much to keep me occupied today. So I am just trying to keep my self destracted! Thanks and hope everyone is having a great day.
Question: Next year I'm fairly certain I would like to acquire some different colors of EE/Ameraucana pullet chicks. How do I go about ordering/finding different color chicks? What is my type called? I really like SunBug4's EEs, and a few others. Would love white, blue, splash, whatever. I just think my girl here is kinda pretty, though boring

I agree with you, I think this kind is cute and I have one. But I wanted more unique EE's. I lucked out and found a lady on Craigslist that has a bunch of pretty EE's. I got a white one and a white and cream one from her. I know those are not super unique but I have a RIR cockeral up and coming and hope that not only will I get alot of the great high brids but I am really hoping that he gives me some cool looking EE's. I Love EE's so very much I am thinking of gettting to the point of just keeping and breeding EE's.
Quote: That is such a great idea, I will have to try this some time.
Well in getting all the babies settled for the night, found one of the baby turkeys not doing so well. Dang it. This little bugger was the oddball of the 4 babies. I really wanted it to make it to grown up with feathers and everything just to see how it would turn out.

Made a liquid mash type food from the poultry flock raiser and it drank a little bit of it..but not much. Little bugger just wanted to lay down on the towel under the heat lamp. Saad sad sad.

out of the 5 grown turkeys that are in the pen only 4 eggs hatched... 3 were of the narangansett coloring so i'm thinking they might be purebred. The oddball was a yellow little bugger with a bit of chocolate color on the top of its head. best guess was either blue slate/chocolate cross or else blue slate/narangansett cross. DANG IT.. I tried my best with the little guy but he didn't make it.

well i am off to bed and gonna try to get some sleep before hubby gets home.
I have noticed that every, and I mean EVERY time I claim a chick as my favorite or one that I really want to see grown up, it does not make it for one reason or another. I am really sorry to hear your lil turkey did not make it.

We took our little Emma to the doctors last night. The doc said she has Hand foot month disease.
NNNNOOOOOOO! Oh my gosh, I am sorry your poor lil girl has it. I really hope it goes away for everyone that has it as fast as possible.
My poor wet and hungry Kate took a break from her nest to come home and eat. About every other day, she honks her arrival and waits at my door for her "bucket". It's full of sweet cob and black oil sunflower seeds and if I leave it out, the chickens devour it. Kate eats for about 10 minutes and then scuttles back to her nest, which is hidden somewhere along my overgrown creek. I decided not to go look for it, because if I can find it, then predators can find it too and I'd rather not lead them straight to it. By my figuring, hopefully little peachicks will be following her around in about 2 and a half weeks.

Oh yes that is right I forgot you have peacocks. Oh you have no idea how Jeliouse I am of you. They are my favorite animal ever! I am going to build a huge pen for them when I build my turkey pen in a few weeks, that way if I find some I wil be ready! Every time I find some I do not have money or they are two old. I know the males don't get the train untill about 3 yrs, but I want to be able to bond with my favorite animal in the world! Even soaking wet she is still so pretty! I can't wait to see your pics of her with a trail of chicks!

I guess that is what's known as murdering a thread :yesss:

Those of us who don't get around to posting until the late morning often have long gaps before anyone posts again, alas.

It's better on the threads that aren't all in one time zone, although the fact is that those threads are nowhere near as active as this one, for the most part.

Not that I've been posting there, either, too busy, in general.

Congrats on your decision!! I used to smoke too...it was gross and I'm glad my DH wouldn't date me until I quit. Amazingly it wasn't hard, I just quit cold turkey and stayed busy for a few days. Sometimes the smell still gets to me though and I think 'Maybe just one?" but then I remeber how icky they really are and I will never pick one up again! I hope you stick with it, your body will thank you!

I kept thinking, right when I first joined, that I was a thread killer too! I couldn't figure out why I'd post in the middle of an active conversation and everyone would disappear!

Now I realize I'm the only one without a life.

I took Spanish (1 yr) in Jr. High.  Didn't help.

Then I joined the army (ok I was 27)  - they taught me Russian and Serbo-Croatian - Now I need spanish .. lol

You're even cooler than I already thought you were! I was an Arabic Linguist (Air Force) and went to DLI in Monterrey. Did you go there too??

DLI is a great place; one of my cousins went there the summer before her senior year in high school and then went on to a PhD in linguistics and career as a college professor working in TESL techniques.

Oh, well, I'm done with toast and pills and now need to go see if that cow has finally had her calf. She sent most of yesterday walking funny...

Oh, man, this would be a great day to have either a 4wd off-road cart or a permanent hired-hand with a good grasp of bovine obstetrics. Too many days in a row of hard work (and of course my one day off for the month involved hiking , mostly on basalt!) and no way to get out of this.

I need to put Ian (BLRW I got from Rainwolf: I've decided against breeding him, and against running more than one pen of BLRWs) and Snotty Cockerel on CL and move Sickly Cockerel out of the pen with the three hens; I don't want chicks from him, and he's putting some wear on poor Tertia, especially. There's all this chicken juggling I need to do- move Bjorn and then Anni-Frid and Agnetha up to the main BLRW pen, sterilize the hoop house, move it to clean ground, and put the Six Slick Chicks in, or possibly just the pullets, move and rejigger the Broody pen and let Malvina rest for a month and set some more eggs.

Speaking of which, I've decided that I'm going to take one hens eggs out of the next setting of Hamburgs to see if she's the one carrying straight comb genetics. Suzzy lays bigger, dark-cream eggs, and so she's the first suspect. I should start scanning CL for incubators, I expect, although I need to get other-than-hall-bathroom year-round brooding facilities set up first.

Maybe I just need a younger, healthier, version of me, the me who used to pend whole weeks building retaining walls out of basalt riprap and recycled driveway concrete.
