I really don't know when Masons are looking to nest but I would still put a block out.

Why can't you have honey bees in the city?

Quarter acre lot, residential. When I was researching all the chicken city codes, out of curiosity, I looked honey bees up and the city code specifically says we can't have them on lots our size. I'm not positive on the exact code, but I if I recall correctly, there was a requirement for land much, much larger than ours.

I have a friend who's parents own a pretty large bee farm and they sell all the bee box stuff - which intrigued me, not that I wanted to be anywhere near them while they were messing with the boxes. It was cool to watch from the safety of their store. I probably wouldn't do it anyway since I have small children (and chickens who are dumb enough to eat them - don't chickens get stung?)

Quote: I'm in Oregon, so no, I don't know where to get it in WA. I buy mine at Wilco down here. For wounds, you have to deal with the wound itself, but then put the Duramycin in their water for 7-14 days, depending on severity of the wound, and not one has gotten infected yet...

Thanks! I haven't had a wounded bird yet but they're only 9-11 weeks old now ;)

Quick question: I am stocking my chicken first aid kit. Where can I find Corid in WA?! I bought Sulmet today and also have Duramycin-10 (which seems to have been a useless purchase since I can't actually find a use for it on the forums other than everyone saying "There's better stuff for whatever you're trying to treat" Doh!) So yeah, where can I find Corid? If we have a problem I don't want to have to start with Sulmet since my birdies are still so young.

I believe I saw some at Wilco in Gig Harbor the last time I was there, but I think it's less expensive online.

We have a brand new, very large farm store in Auburn (in the old Walmart, next to the Supermall). Next time I go, I'll ask if they carry Corid. They had refrigerators with antibiotics. I didn't look inside - I just noticed they had one and thought that was pretty cool.

I'm not sure what any of the stuff you mentioned above is for. When we come over, I'll ask you about it. Maybe I should get a chicken first aid kit going, too - especially since I seem to have an accident prone Brahma.

Poo on them!

Just like eating lettuce! Ain't nothing to it. They are such fun, fascinating little creatures. Also for those who don't know. Two years of no pollination and mankind is done yup DEAD. The major pollinators are honey bees, Mason bees and bumble bees. PLEASE help these little creatures. All 3 are non aggressive and only sting as last resort for defense.

I just discovered the wonderful mason bees! I'm volunteering at a girl scout day camp this summer and I'll be having the girls make mason bee homes. I though about going all out with the removeable liners like this:

but, for 11 year olds I figure this model is better:

The theme at camp this year is Candyland so I thought making bee homes would be good- after all, where would we get natural sweetness without our awesome bees?
