Firewifejess I think for gapeworm you gently probe around their throat with a q-tip and see is it comes out pink or reddish or has any little worms on it. Eek, I'd probably faint if it did.

OK Listen up. I am changing directions. I am getting out of the B RIR. I need mine (1 cock / 3 hens) gone by Saturday. I will make somebody a good deal.

I'm curious... do Bantam RIR have attitude like my LF RIR? Or, is it just my RIR. I used to think I wanted all RIR. Now I'm not thinking that at all.

Ha! Ha! My son just asked me what RIR meant, and I told him and my husband just referred to her as "ornery fowl... just plain foul... our "not-nice" chicken". Guess I'm not the only one developing an opinion about her. He might be holding a grudge. He got pecked yesterday during the evening chicken chase while trying to get her to the brooder.

My RIR is a brat. I'm hard pressed to be able to get close enough to grab her up and when I do she gives me the stink eye and struggles to no end, no matter how I hold her. I make her submit anyway so she knows who the real boss is ;) We had a RIR cockeral I got rid of because he was already a jerk and I knew if I kept him he wouldn't turn out to be one of those nice roosters you hear about who is a gentleman to his ladies...I'm glad we have Ricky now.

Did I mention we bought primer for the coop and run today, and 20 bags of sand? I shoveled 1200lbs of sand into the run this evening all by myself. I'm super woman

And guess what? That's nowhere near enough sand for the run. Another 20 would suffice. Another 30 would be pretty awesome.

NOT getting more for a while, my body is mad.

You go girl!

Today I got the most of the painting done on the coop except the trim. So far, with exception of a $7 can of white, we've repurposed old paint from when we painted the house. Now I have to shop for the trim paint. We couldn't find any in our pile of paint from our house. Bummer.

I'm hoping we have enough left over shingles to roof the coop. I don't want to have have to buy those, either.

I thought I was going to go with sand, too. Now I'm second guessing it - because I have a feather-footed Brahma. My run will be partially roofed, and partially exposed.

"A brat" is a good description for Rhodie. She doesn't like to be picked up and sqwaks the whole time she's being carried. She will also try to get out of my arms. She's given me some pretty good scratches.

Every morning, when I go to take everyone out of the brooder and outside, Rhodie gives me the stink eye and hops up on the roost bar (which is out of my reach). So, I look at her, tell her when she's ready, I'll come back for her. I'll shut the brooder door, leave the garage, wait a couple of minutes, and then go back. She'll be standing by the door and will then let me pick her up. Such a pain that she does this every single morning.

The other two will hop up on my lap and let me pet them. Not Rhodie! That chickie better lay well, because her personality is lacking.
